Ron Calcagno played quarterback for the Santa Clara Broncos in the early 1960s. At the end of his senior season Ron, who was co-captain of the team, received Football Little All-American Honors. At graduation, Calcagno held five SCU passing records: most passes completed, total yards, total yards in a single season, most TD passes, and most passes completed in a single season. He led Santa Clara to victory during the first Homecoming game in Buck Shaw Stadium. During the offseason, Ron put on his catcher’s glove for the Broncos. He was a member of the 1962 Bronco Baseball team that reached the College World Series. After graduation, Ron coached the Mountain View Saint Francis High School Lancers for 24 years where he amassed 12 West Catholic League Championships, won 233 games, and earned 11 Central Coast section titles. In 1996, Calcagno took a position with the Oakland A’s and four years later was inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame.
