Nelson began his career as a wrestler at San Jose's (Calif.) Gunderson High School and qualified for the United States Olympic Team while at West Valley College. He transferred to Santa Clara, joined the boxing team and went on to win the National Intercollegiate championship in the 125-pound weight class twice and was a two-time All-American selection. He went undefeated during his collegiate career.
