Wiechers from high school was known as one of the most talented amateurs in the nation. Before attending Santa Clara, he won the the 1962 U.S. Junior Amurter, which caught the eye of many college coaches. Wiechers decided to attend Santa Clara, where he had a Hall of Fame career. While at Santa Clara he collected many accolades and honors. He won prestigious titles such as the 1964 Western Junior, 1966 Western Amateur, and the ’66 Trans-Mississippi Amateur. Wiechers became a First Team All-American, the same year where he was the 1965 Men’s individuals runner up, only to lose by one stroke to University of Houston star golfer, Marty Fleckman. From all his accolades, Wiechers was nominated in Golf’s Digest as the number one U.S. amateur in 1966, which also awarded him one of the alternate spots for the USA/World Amateur team. After graduating from Santa Clara, Wiechers played on the PGA tour from 1966 to 1979, where he always was near the top of the leaderboards. Wiechers best years were in the late 1960’s through the mid-1970’s when he finished on the Top 60 money list five times. Jim was able to play at many elite courses over his 13-year career including Taiheiyo Club Masters and the US Open. He appeared four times at the US Open, placing 14th in 1975, which gave him an invitation to the Masters. His best moment occurred when he won the PGA tour in 1969 at the West End Classic in the Bahamas.
