Summer 2018 Global Fellow

ACE 2020 Cohort, Andew Elliot, worked in Kumasi, Ghana as part of the Global Fellows Program in Summer 2018.

Over the past summer, Andrew Elliot, a member of the ACE 2020 Cohort, worked in Kumasi, Ghana as part of the Global Fellows Program. He interned at an NGO called Bright Generation, which works in the local community “to empower local businesses and women entrepreneurs”. The organization also advocates for environmental sustainability, as shown by their production of bamboo bikes that are shipped all around the world.

As an intern, Andrew worked alongside Bernice Dapaah, the CEO of Bright Generation (and “an all-around inspiring person”), in communicating with Chinese suppliers “to work towards potential new business ventures”. He was also able to bring money raised by a Management 80 class here at SCU to help four women farmers expand their chili farms through zero-interest loans.

Andrew’s favorite part of the experience in particular involved his participation in a Tom’s Shoes distribution. He had the opportunity to visit a local school with 400 donated shoes and went from class to class putting shoes on the kids. He notes that it “was a really moving experience to be able to be a part of that and is one that [he] won’t forget”. To others that are thinking of applying, Andrew advises “to stop thinking and just do it”. He notes, “It’s not often that opportunities to travel come up, let alone opportunities to do something that will help you grow and learn more about yourself and your place in the world. Absolutely apply”.

Thank you to Andrew for sharing your exciting summer experience with us!
