Patrick McQueen: Working and Learning at Cristo Rey
After working in the counseling office at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School for a few weeks, I have become more comfortable with my responsibilities, which has allowed to me to become more aware of how I can be an effective intern here throughout the year. Like in any new environment, it was a bit of a tough transition starting work at a high school. The faculty and staff have been very friendly and helpful with whatever tasks I need assistance with which has made me feel welcomed and respected as a fellow staff member. The campus is always quite busy, and although my office is somewhat tucked away, I always see students and faculty on the move, especially the seniors who frequently visit the counseling office because they are working on college applications.
My job has consisted primarily of researching summer programs for rising juniors and seniors, whom I will meet with to inform them about how to go about applying for these programs. I am learning a lot about different programs in the local area, both through program websites and reflections of Cristo Rey students who previously participated in these programs. I am also learning about the general process for applying to college from a counselor's point of view, which has been both interesting and informative.
I have been working in Salesforce and completing online tutorials which has been challenging. The best surprise I’ve experienced is yet to come; I think I will most enjoy meeting with students to educate them on the various available summer enrichment programs, and eventually confirm their enrollment in them. Overall it has been busy, informative, and nice to engage with people outside of the Santa Clara Community.
