SCU Own It Summit 2020
The Santa Clara University Women’s Own It Summit is an empowering day-long conference that brings together students looking to gain professional skills, as well as grow into confident and independent women and men. Put on entirely by SCU students, the Own It Summit 2020 was a huge success. The three hour conference consisted of two keynotes and a break session of choice, bringing together Santa Clara University students and families on the morning of Super Bowl Sunday. Keynote speeches were made by Paula Schneider, President and CEO of Susan G Komen, and Molly Blume, entrepreneur and best selling author of Molly’s Game. In between these two powerful women’s speeches, attendees had the opportunity to attend a breakout session of their choice. Guests heard from women in a variety of industries- ranging from law, to medicine, to teaching.
Laura Pearl, SCU senior, and Co-Chair of this year’s summit, shared with us a few words about her experience.
How has being a part of Own It made an impact on you?
Own It has been the most rewarding thing I've been a part of at Santa Clara. To bring together professional women from all industries and different points in their careers (Our speakers included the CEO of Susan G Komen as well as a woman running for local office!) for the students at SCU to engage with was challenging but certainly worth it when I got to watch everyone walk out of the day standing a little taller.
What was one of your key takeaways from the speeches presented at this year’s summit?
Molly Bloom shared a message that I try to emulate every day which is to be a woman for all women. I took it with me and am still reminding myself to actively support all women every day!
Tell us a bit about your team and the work it took to put together this year’s summit.
The Own It Team is truly unbelievable. Bringing in the most high profile speakers we have hosted in the summit's history seemed so daunting, but it went off without a hitch because every woman on our team is an absolute force of nature. We learned as we went and mastered fundraising, marketing, logistics, etc. together. I am so proud of what we accomplished.
