Summer Arts Class Open to DCP Students

For the second summer, the Department of Art and Art History and the Summer Session Program offered an art and writing intensive class to Downtown College Prep (DCP) students. The program is funded by a major grant from the Hearst Foundation. The Community Initiatives for the Visual Arts (CIVA) grant is intended to support local arts education and outreach and to help the department and university build relationships with the Bay Area arts and other non-profit organizations. DCP primarily serves low-income students who would be first in their families to attend college.
Approximately 17 DCP students along with four SCU students attended the 5-week intensive art class taught by Professors Kelly Detweiler and Pancho Jiménez from the Department of Art and Art History. The same DCP students also attended a writing class taught by Professor Jeff Zorn from the English Department. In the arts class SCU students collaborated with DCP students and together they held an art opening showcasing their work on Thursday, July 23rd. Proud parents, DCP siblings and their classmates, and the SCU community filled the Fine Arts Gallery on this grand occasion. What a great turn out! Great job to the faculty and students who participated in this summer class.
