Documenting Our World

Communication Department faculty are creating documentary films that capture the nuance and complexity of modern life by exploring diversity, sexual assault, and what it means to be part of a family.

The Digital Filmmaking faculty in the Communication Department use their experiences creating documentaries to enrich the classroom experience of their students. Here are few projects that are in production or recently completed.

Stephen Lee is producing a documentary entitled An Extended Family exploring the changing meaning of family in today’s society as he brings together multiple children from across the country fathered by the same sperm donor.

Yahia Mahamdi is completing (In) Tolerance, a documentary that tells the story of how Santa Clara University is facing the challenge of improving its campus climate in terms of diversity in faculty, students, and staff, and building a more tolerant and inclusive community.

Michael Whalen recently completed Can't Thread a Moving Needle with Barb Fraser from the Department of Theatre & Dance that explores the problem of sexual assault on college campuses. It has been adopted by over 100 Universities in the country as part of their sexual assault awareness education.
