The Lives of International Students

Gordon Young investigated the cultural and economic impact of a record number of international students who are studying in Flint, Michigan, for the Education Life section of The New York Times. The transition from life in Saudi Arabia or India or Jamaica to a struggling, Rust Belt city can be jarring, but in the process students said they developed a deeper, more clear-eyed understanding of the real America, and experienced an unanticipated sense of community.
