Bruce received his B.A. in English from the University of Notre Dame, an M.A. in English from the University of Michigan, a Master's in Applied Spirituality from the University of San Francisco, and his Ph.D. in Christian Spirituality from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.  He has been especially interested in the connection between spirituality and social justice.  He has also taught courses on the history of spirituality, contemporary spiritual practices, and spiritual direction.
