Academic Year Adjunct Lecturer
Travis Stevens is a historian of Christian thought who specializes in medieval mystical theology. His research focuses on the role of the gendered body, especially as the locus of emotion and affect, in approaching union with the divine. His research questions the place of the body in the context of the history of erotic love between the soul and Christ, and how images of violence, such as wounding, striking, and beating, illustrate the reciprocal suffering of the Christian and Christ, who are lovesick for one another. He comes to Santa Clara from Seton Hall University, where he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the University Core Curriculum from 2018-2019.
