How do I petition to graduate?

Visit this page on the SCU Registrar's website for information on how to petition to graduate.  Be sure to notice deadlines related to your projected Commencement date.  Additional information about Graduation requirements can be found on the Registrar FAQ page.

How do I order Academic Attire for the Commencement Ceremony?
Academic Attire should be ordered online from Oak Hall Cap & Gown and will be mailed directly to you.  The deadline to order attire is Sunday, May 18 to ensure that you receive it in time. The complete package includes your cap, gown, hood, and tassel. Extra accessories and add-on items can also be ordered from the Oak Hall website, but are completely OPTIONAL and not required for Commencement.

Where do I pick up my honor cord?
University honor cords are provided for undergraduate students who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.500 or higher by the end of Winter Quarter. Undergraduates who have met these requirements will be notified by email in late April detailing honor cord pick up instructions.

How long are the Commencement ceremonies? 
The Undergraduate Ceremony should last approximately 3 hours.  Each Graduate Ceremony will last approximately 1.5 hours.

What time will the Commencement gates open?
Gates will open at the following times for the Saturday, June 14 ceremonies:

  • 7:15 a.m. - Gates Open for Undergraduate Commencement
  • 3:30 p.m. - Gates Open for Graduate Commencement for the Pastoral Ministries Program & the School of Education and Counseling Psychology
  • 6:30 p.m. - Gates open for Graduate Commencement for the Leavey School of Business and the School of Engineering

How many tickets does each graduate receive?
Each graduate will receive (8) eight guests tickets for the Commencement Ceremony.  Information on how to claim guest tickets through Tassel, SCU’s Commencement registration system, was sent to all eligible graduates in early April.  Children 2 and under do not require a ticket for entry.

We invite graduates to share any unneeded tickets with other students hoping to bring more guests – graduates will be able to transfer the digital tickets to whomever they like via their Tassel account.  The Commencement Office does not manage a waitlist for extra seats, and we do not have an extra ticket distribution process.

Will there be ADA seating at Undergraduate Commencement on Saturday, June 14?
An ADA tent will be located on the north end of Stevens Stadium, which will offer shaded seating and extended aisles and rows. These seats will be available on a first come, first served basis. To accommodate as many guests requiring ADA seating as possible, each ADA guest will be allowed one companion seat. It is highly recommended for guests to arrive when gates open at 7:15 a.m. 

In addition, we will have a cooling center located in the Locatelli Center which will broadcast the 8:30 a.m. Undergraduate Ceremony and the 4:00 p.m. Graduate Program in Pastoral Ministries and the School of Education and Counseling Psychology Commencement Ceremony.  The Locatelli Student Activity Center is located adjacent to Stevens Stadium.

Will the Commencement Ceremonies be Live Streamed?
The Commencement Ceremonies and stage crossing will be live streamed and posted on the Commencement website on June 14. In addition, the Commencement Liturgy will also be live streamed on the Commencement website.

I am receiving multiple degrees. Do I cross the stage more than once?
Each student will walk across the stage one time. Students with multiple degrees will be recognized in the Commencement Program, but must choose which school or college they would like to sit and walk with at Commencement. Graduate’s hood color will reflect the school or college chosen.

In what order do graduates cross the stage at Undergraduate Commencement?
Graduates will cross the stage by school in the following order: Arts, Business, Engineering, Sciences.

When will I receive my diploma?
On stage, graduates will receive their portfolio (diploma case). Diplomas will be mailed to you by the Office of the Registrar once the completion of academic requirements has been verified. Mailings begin 3-4 months after the degree completion date.

Will graduates be professionally photographed at Commencement?
Graduates will have their photo taken by a professional photographer as they cross the stage.  Digital proofs will be emailed to graduates within one week after Commencement with the opportunity to purchase photos.

Will there be a flower vendor on campus during Commencement?
An SCU approved vendor, Commencement Day Flowers, will sell flowers and leis at four locations on campus on Commencement day, June 14.

Are guests allowed to bring a bag into Commencement?
No large purses, backpacks or bags will be allowed at Commencement. The policy states that each guest can bring one large clear bag (either a one-gallon Ziploc style bag or a 12" x 6" x 12" clear bag), plus a small clutch. Please see the Event Security Policy for additional information. 

Are guests allowed to bring water into Commencement?
Guests may bring an empty, reusable water bottle and/or a clear unopened water bottle to the ceremony. Water filling stations will be made available to guests at the Commencement Ceremonies. All graduates will have a small unopened bottle of water at the base of their chair at the ceremony.

Where should I park on Commencement day?
Parking on the SCU Campus during Commencement Weekend is complimentary for graduates and their guests. However, both standard parking and ADA parking will be severely impacted due to the large crowds expected, so please arrive early to Commencement events! 

We strongly recommend using rideshare (Uber/Lyft) or carpooling to campus, if possible. To access the rideshare drop off area, please enter the University through the main entrance at 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 95053 and stay to the right.

The designated ADA parking is located on the first floor of the Main Parking Structure. Guests must have a valid ADA placard to park in this designated ADA parking area.

What can I do if I do not want my name in the Commencement Program?
The names of all graduates deemed eligible to participate in Commencement by Wednesday, April 30 will automatically be included in the 2025 Commencement Program. To have your name omitted from the program, please fill out and submit this form by Wednesday, April 30.

Will there be a Commencement Liturgy?
Graduates and their families are invited to participate in SCU’s Commencement Liturgy on Friday, June 13 at 4:00 p.m. in SCU's historic Mission Santa Clara de Asís. Tickets are not required for this event and all are welcome to attend.

What if I have questions about the Undergraduate Grad Bash?
Celebrate your last night as an SCU student with your classmates, family, and the SCU Alumni Association! With your help, Grad Bash will light up Bellomy Field from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. immediately following the Commencement Liturgy. Tickets go on sale on Monday, April 14 at 10 a.m. and are free for graduates and children 12 and under. Admission is $55 per person for all other attendees.
