3/10: COVID-19 Update on Housing, Dining, Facility Hours, and More

The following message was emailed to students on March 10, 2020.

Dear Santa Clara University students,

Yesterday, Fr. O’Brien announced that classes and exams will move to online format beginning today through April 13. The COVID-19 outbreak remains a rapidly evolving situation with unprecedented challenges for all of us.

We will continue to provide updates and keep the university community informed. The COVID-19 website has the most up to date information. A dedicated phone hotline is staffed 24/7 until further notice. Contact: 408-551-3321.

This email will provide an update on a number of campus programs and services during this time frame.

Actions taken to date include:

  • The university announced that from March 9 to April 13, 2020, classes and exams will not be held in person. We have prepared a set of Frequently Asked Questions with information about conducting classes online or remotely.

  • The campus remains open and essential services are continuing. We recognize that some students will remain on campus during this period and we are prepared to continue to meet their needs.

  • A number of university-sponsored events scheduled between March 10–April 13 have been canceled or postponed.

  • To reduce the likelihood of any transmission University Operations implemented our antiviral deep cleaning procedures.

  • In addition to sending regular email updates to the community, we established an email address covid19@scu.edu for anyone with specific questions or inquiries. PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL OR OUR DEDICATED COVID-19 WEBSITE REGULARLY FOR NEW UPDATES FROM SCU.

Housing and Residence Life (HRL)

In the spirit of preventing transmission of the virus, students were encouraged in the March 9 email from Fr. O’Brien to go home as soon as practical for them. However, understanding this may not be easy for some to do at this time, the residence halls, and dining services will stay open for those unable to return home.

  • Students who remain on campus should practice social distancing and intentional hygiene measures

  • Residence Life events are canceled until April 13

  • Mail delivery may be delayed in Casa, Sobrato, and University Villas due to reduced staffing

  • Yesterday, HRL communicated enhanced judicial fines for conduct violations

  • To limit the number of people going in and out of the halls, no guests are permitted in the residence halls. Students are encouraged to socialize in other places on campus where they have adequate space to ensure social distancing (an arm's length away)

  • Additional high touch-deep cleaning housekeeping services will continue

  • Service Desk hours will be posted at each desk

  • Residence Life duty coverage will continue as usual

Benson Memorial Center

As a primary hub for community-building on campus, the Benson Memorial Center will remain open to support dining services and provide appropriate space for students to socialize on campus with adequate space to ensure social distancing (an arm's length away). Given the number of daily patrons in the Benson Memorial Center, additional high touch-deep cleaning housekeeping services will continue. Modified hours of operation are as follows:

March 10-22: Monday through Friday: 7 a.m.–9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday: 9 a.m.–7 p.m.

March 23-28: Monday through Friday: 7 a.m.–7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday: 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

March 29: Monday through Friday: 7 a.m.–1 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday: 8 a.m.–1 a.m.

Dining Services

With the exception of satellite cafes, Campus Dining locations will remain open with reduced hours and modified menu options. For hours of operation through April 12, please visit Auxiliary Services.

Post Office and Mailing Services

The Campus Post Office and Mailing Services will remain open; however mail and package pick up hours may be modified due to availability of student staffing. At this time, delivery to the Amazon lockers in Alameda Hall will continue, without interruption.

Law Library

The Law Library is currently on reduced hours (as scheduled) due to the Spring Break and will resume regular hours on Sunday (Library hours).

Cowell Center

To support students who will remain on campus during the shift to online courses and exams, the Cowell Center will be open with a reduced clinical, medical and case management staff to provide patient/client care Monday–Friday between 10 a.m.–3 p.m. The Cowell Center is encouraging clients with routine appointments to reschedule appointments upon return to normal university operations, if appropriate. Crisis appointment hours will remain daily 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Given the number of daily patrons in the Cowell Center, additional high touch-deep cleaning housekeeping services will continue.

Campus Recreation (Malley Center)

To support students who will remain on campus during the shift to online courses and exams, the Malley Center will operate with modified hours, subject to availability of student staff. Given the number of daily patrons in the Malley Center, additional high touch-deep cleaning housekeeping services will continue. To reduce the possible spread of virus, equipment check out from the front desk will be suspended until further notice. Refer to the Campus Recreation website for information on facility hours and all programs.

Campus Bookstore

The Bronco Corner Bookstore will remain open Monday-Friday between 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; closed Saturday and Sunday. A message is forthcoming regarding extension of deadline to return winter term books and ordering and pickup/delivery of spring term course materials.

Please check your campus email frequently to stay informed of new developments in this evolving situation. And above all, take good care of yourself.
