If you have never been in individual counseling, you may not know what to expect. You may feel nervous and even find it difficult to come to CAPS. Most students, however, are surprised at how “normal” the counseling experience is when they are working with a therapist at CAPS.  

CAPS offers mental health treatment for students through individual counseling, couples counseling, group counseling, crisis intervention, extensive outreach to students, and mental health consultations to parents, faculty and staff. 

Although college is an exciting time, students may still experience stress and emotional duress that can adversely affect their psychological well-being and hinder their academic success. When this happens, CAPS encourages students to seek counseling. Counseling is a unique opportunity to spend time with a trained therapist. Your therapist will listen and help you to better understand yourself while supporting you in identifying ways of reaching your goals. 

Students address a variety of issues in individual therapy. Some of those issues are normal developmental issues, such as test anxiety, stress management, homesickness, intimate relationships, self-esteem, individuation, family conflicts, career issues, decision-making, sexual issues, cultural adjustment, identity development. Others may involve more serious, episodic or longstanding struggles such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, alcohol and drug concerns and trauma. Therapy is known to be beneficial because individuals can talk privately about their concerns in a safe environment while experiencing the full attention and support of a professional therapist who is focused entirely on them. 

CAPS therapists will help you to identify and express your feelings about current and past experiences while helping you explore ways to manage stress, anxiety, sadness, hurt, pain or any emotion you may be experiencing. We are here to help you to take better care of yourself so that you can accomplish all that you have come to Santa Clara University to accomplish. 

CAPS utilizes a short-term counseling model to help students cope with the challenges of college life. When the therapeutic needs of a student require greater resources, your therapist will work with you to find a therapist in the community. All students are eligible for up to 10 sessions per academic year and you and your therapist can determine the exact frequency of the sessions. The first six (6) sessions are of no charge.
