Dear Students,
As many of you prepare for spring break travel, I want to share an important update regarding travel to Mexico. The U.S. Department of State maintains a detailed travel advisory for Mexico that outlines safety considerations and current risk levels for various regions of the country and also an advisory about Spring Break Travel to Mexico.
In addition, on February 23, 2026, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued a Security Alert. You can review the advisory here: In addition, the University advises you to review news reports related to specific areas. As well, the U.S. Department of State has a Worldwide Caution advisory Worldwide Caution advisory in place for U.S. citizens traveling abroad, regardless of the location.
All U.S. citizens are strongly recommended to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive updates and assistance from U.S. embassies/consulates. Non-U.S. citizens should register with their home country.
The University strongly encourages you to:
- Review the travel advisory before finalizing any plans;
- Consider postponing or altering travel to areas with heightened security risks;
- Register your trip with STEP if you plan to travel internationally; and
- Stay informed about local conditions and follow guidance from local authorities while abroad.
- Consider getting travel insurance to cover yourself in case delays, accidents, or illness occur on your trip. Your current medical insurance may not cover care in another country.
Regardless of Spring Break destination travel, keep the following in mind:
- Be aware of your surroundings;
- Monitor local media for updates;
- Follow the directions of local authorities and in case of emergency, call 911 (or the equivalent if abroad); and
- Keep family and friends advised of your location and well-being via phone, text, and social media.
Your safety is our top priority. Please reach out if you have questions or need support in making safe travel decisions.
