The Master of Arts in Teaching - Teaching Credential is designed for individuals who want to eventually teach in public schools. This is a full-time program that is completed in a year. Students in this program start in the summer (Summer Pre-Session, Summer, or Fall Pre-Session) and complete the program the following summer. Students are given a field placement within a classroom the entire year to work side-by-side with a master teacher and develop their teaching and professional skills.

Candidates for admission to MATTC must have meaningful, recent (within the past 3 years) experience working with youngsters in the same age range as the students they intend to teach. Candidates for admission to MATTC - Multiple Subject Credential must have volunteer or paid experience working with and supervising groups of children between the ages of 5 – 14 years old in an organized, formal setting in the US; candidates for admission to MATTC - Single Subject Credential must have volunteer or paid experience working with and supervising groups of youth between the ages of 12 – 18 years old in an organized, formal setting in the US. The recommended minimum amount of time dedicated to this experience is 30 hours.

This experience may take place in a public, private, charter, or Catholic school; in a scout troop or other highly-structured extracurricular activity; in a religious or language school that meets on a regular, ongoing basis; or in another formal context serving students in grades K – 8 or grades 6 — 12. The work should involve some degree of planning for and supervising children or youth.


The following activities will not satisfy the expectations for admission to the MATTC program: teaching music, art, or dance lessons (unless you intend to pursue a K-12 music, art, or physical education teaching credential); working as a babysitter, nanny, or daycare provider; working with your own children, their friends, or members of your immediate family; providing one-on-one tutoring in any academic or non-academic subject area.

The following activities may satisfy the expectations for admission to the MATTC program: teaching/coaching sports, working as preschool teacher, working as a summer camp counselor.

All MATTC applicants are required to submit a letter of recommendation written by the individual who supervised their work with youngsters which provides an assessment of the quality of their performance.

Catholic school teachers who want a preliminary credential should apply to the Catholic Master of Arts in Teaching + Teaching Credential (CatMAT) program. If students complete the entire three-year program at SCU and continue to the , they earn the MAT degree as well. 

Yes. We require all CatMAT candidates have full time positions because the state requires three years of full time teaching to fulfill the student teaching requirement. On average students take about three years to complete the program.

Catholic school principals prefer to hire credentialed teachers and recently most are able to do so. However, if a credentialed teacher who meets the qualifications is not available, principals may hire a non-credentialed candidate if he/she is in a credential program particularly if the candidate has some credential classes already taken in classroom management, reading and math methods etc.
