Bilingual Masters of Arts in Teaching Teaching Credential

The School of Education & Counseling Psychology is pleased to offer Bilingual Authorization in Spanish to help future educators meet the dynamic needs of emergent bilingual children and youth. Dual language programs have proven to be the single most effective program for students identified as English learners. Becoming authorized as a bilingual instructor can lead to a wider range of teaching position options in the state of California.

Bilingual Authorization Program graduates are authorized to teach their content area(s) in Spanish and English, English Language Development, Spanish Language Development and Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English. While many bilingual authorization programs focus on preparing multiple subject bilingual teachers (elementary school programs), our program prepares multiple and single subject bilingual educators to teach in bilingual programs, as well as middle and high school teachers to teach specific subject areas like Biology, Mathematics and Social Studies in Spanish.  Spanish langauge proficiency is required for the BMATTC program.

“This program taught me immensely about the policies and inequalities that are in place with bilingual programs…and has opened many opportunities for me. It provides me with an entirely different door in the education world today.”

“I chose the Bilingual Authorization Program at Santa Clara University because it offered three courses for the bilingual authorization in Spanish. The courses dealt with theories about language written in the last decades while still providing historical context of the development of Bilingual education in the United States. I learned to use teaching practices that engage students' language tools and transfer them to another language. Most important, I learned to recognize and value my students' cultural and linguistic diversity.”

“SCU’s program allowed me to get my credential, Masters Degree and Bilingual Authorization in the same time frame, which was a great surprise since I have family to take care of and I wouldn’t need to spend more time away from home. The program has taught me to see the student as a person and to care for the student. It has also taught me a lot about bilingual history and the reasoning behind closing the academic gap with students. I learned to appreciate students’ prior knowledge, language and identities. One of the greatest benefits of the program is that I am able to work with students like me, who speak the same language, and to be able to empower and support those families and communities.”
