Healthcare Innovation Mentorship Program

Program Description

The Healthcare Innovation Mentorship Program provides students opportunities to explore emerging innovations and technologies in healthcare, and gain a rich understanding of the current status and future perspectives of the field. The program offers mentored experiences in healthcare innovation through a combination of co-/extracurricular activities, and appropriate professional development and networking opportunities. The program leverages the co-/extracurricular and professional development activities established by the Healthcare Innovation and Design Program, as well as its network of industry partners and external mentors.

Essential Program Elements

HIMP participants must satisfy the following three program elements:

  1. Participation in the Healthcare Innovation Seminar Series that exposes students to diverse areas of healthcare.
  2. Mentored reflections (with a focus on professional development and vocational discernment) under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
  3. Informational interviews with Santa Clara faculty and research staff working on projects in healthcare and related fields.

Student Recruitment

HIMP is designed to support first-year and sophomore students in good academic standing, who are excited about increasing their awareness of healthcare innovation and inform themselves of future career opportunities in this field. Student mentees will be selected based on an application that will include a brief resume, a one-page personal essay on their motivation to participate in the program, and a letter of recommendation that addresses their strengths, talents, and motivation. Upon selection, the student fellows will consult with the program director to develop a schedule that outlines how they will fulfill each of the program elements.

HIMP is designed as a one-year program, and the participating students will be provided a modest stipend support. At the end of the program, participants may apply for additional year(s) of support for related co-curricular activities and project work through the Healthcare Innovation Fellows Program.
