A Vision Realized

Wednesday, Jul. 10, 2013

Since 2009, three teams of Santa Clara civil engineering seniors/social activists have helped villagers in Gambibgo, Ghana, construct a library and meeting hall using sustainable building materials and innovative architecture designed to withstand the wind, rain, and floods that would typically destroy a traditionally-built mud and thatch-roofed structure within a couple of rainy seasons.

Motivated by a strong desire to improve the lives of this underserved population while also respecting the environment, the students made great progress in furthering sustainable design and teaching local masons new construction methods. But when it came time to fill the library with books, the project foundered. Read how a fortuitous meeting in Ghana led to a happy ending.
