In her work with Human Rights Watch, Maria McFarland has conducted extensive advocacy before the governments of the United States, Canada, and European and Latin American countries. She has written and edited Human Rights Watch reports and has testified before the U.S. Congress and the Canadian Parliament. In her current position, she helps guide the organization’s work on national security, immigration and criminal justice in the United States. She said a that getting the facts right and spelling out the sources of those facts are both essential to building trust. The facts drive her organization’s advocacy, she said, as opposed to the advocacy driving the fact-finding.
