Truth-telling, Engagement, and Impact

Robert Rosenthal

FEATURED IN THIS VIDEO:
Robert Rosenthal, executive director of the
Center for Investigative Reporting

Robert Rosenthal is an award-winning journalist who worked at newspapers including the New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer (where he spent 22 years), and the San Francisco Chronicle. He joined the Center for Investigative Reporting in 2008. He discussed the importance of truth telling, storytelling and transparency: The Center’s work often includes a box explaining how a big investigation was conducted, for example. He also drew a distinction between being an advocate for a particular point of view and wanting reporting to have an impact. The Center’s staff includes an impact analyst whose job it is to track how its stories move through traditional and social media, and whether they change the conversation or the law.
