Gillian King
Recipient of the 2021-22 Fr. Richard Coz Scholarship

“To me, college is all about exploring everything there is to explore, and Santa Clara is the perfect place to foster that attitude,” says Gillian King ’23. A Marketing major, Gillian has always been interested in the “creative side” of business. “I’m very interested in the visual aspect of marketing and challenged myself to pick up some basic drawing and design skills,” she says. Proving the point, Gillian cites a set design course as her current favorite. “We’re designing our own concept and presentation of Romeo and Juliet, even down to costume, set design, and lighting,” she says. And while such skills may not directly relate to marketing, Gillian will take these lessons with her into the workforce and beyond. “

Both King’s mother and aunt attended SCU (classes of ’91 and ’88 respectively) so she often heard stories of their time there and “saw firsthand the strong, compassionate women that Santa Clara influenced.” Gillian also heard many stories about her mother’s time at the University, and has met many of her lifelong Santa Clara friends. “This just proved to me that this is a special place, and I wanted to experience it for myself,” she explains.

She’s also grateful to the donors who support the Father Coz Scholarship for allowing her to focus on “getting the most out of my education, rather than worrying about how I will pay for it. I am grateful, not just for the financial support, but for the community of recipients and donors who have all been positively impacted by Fr. Coz. I can continue making steps toward my future knowing I have an amazing community rooting for me.”

After graduation, Gillian plans to pursue her passion for business by making a “positive impact through marketing by helping to improve sustainability” in the business world. “Santa Clara has helped me cultivate the tools and given me the support I need to make this plan a reality.”
