How would you define your international education experience?
  • Study Abroad Student

What was your international education experience like?

I participated in a month-long Spanish language and Mexican Culture Summer Program at Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico. My goal was to improve my Spanish language skills as well as completely immerse myself in my culture. Residing at a homestay during my time in Guadalajara was especially helpful in my adjustment and integration as it allowed me to meet and interact with Mexican students whom I probably would not have met otherwise. I thoroughly enjoyed my classes and the field trip to Mexico City, where we visited sites of great historical and archaeological importance. I am extremely grateful that I stepped out of my comfort zone and participated in an international education experience.

What message do you have to share with students and community members about the importance of international education?

Any form of international education is an extremely valuable experience and part of a well-rounded program of study as it provides ample learning opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom as one acquires a greater understanding of distinct perspectives and ways of life. It also allows for connecting with many people from various walks of life and for personal growth by acquiring important skills such as adaptability, diplomacy and foreign language skills. Finally, an international education experience may serve as a stepping stone for future professional endeavors and specialization.
