Class of 2021 San Jose Immersion

Tuesday, Sept. 12th - Saturday, Sept. 16th, 2017

Cost: $200 (need based scholarships available)*

Application deadline: July 31st by midnight.

This unique program for incoming first-year students is an opportunity to build community with your new classmates, learn about the social and economic reality of San Jose, deepen in your understanding of SCU’s Jesuit tradition of holistic community engaged education and give back to your new community, all prior to the start of the academic year.

Participants will be allowed to move in early on Tuesday, Sept. 12th. Dinner the evening of the 12th will kick off the immersion. Students will stay Tuesday through Saturday morning at a local church and the days will be spent volunteering and learning first hand about poverty and homelessness in downtown San Jose, just beyond SCU’s campus. In partnership with Sacred Heart Community Service, an organization that prepares and distributes food to over 20,000 people every month, the SCU group will volunteer at a food pantry and clothing store for those in need.

The program will promote a vivid awareness of poverty through some simulation activities and learning from Sacred Heart and other local organizations and community leaders who actively work for equality and justice in the Silicon Valley. Finally, the program will serve as an introduction to the local work of Santa Clara University through its Thriving Neighbor’s Initiative, which seeks to leverage the resources of the university in service of the Washington Community of San Jose and partner with this community in the holistic education of our students.

As is our tradition on immersions, reflections in the evenings will provide space for processing the day's events and sharing insights with one another, while contemplating the invitation extended by the Ignatian and Catholic Social Tradition to respond to the reality of the poor in our midst, but most importantly to be in relationship and solidarity with those most vulnerable in our community.

*The student fee will cover all program expenses and a donation to Sacred Heart Community Service.
