SCU students will spend a week with the Social Caribbean Immersion Program experiencing Laudato Si in action: Amerindian communities on the Guyana-Brazil border. Though located in South America and bordered by Venezuela, Suriname and Brazil, Guyana is considered the largest Caribbean country and the only English speaking country in South America. It is a fascinating and unique country full of diverse culture and history.

The immersion program starts in Georgetown, the Capital of Guyana and travels to the City of Lethem, near the Amazons, bordering Brazil. Participants will learn about the culture of the Amazon and how the Jesuits work alongside the indigenous communities on the border of Guyana and Brazil. The group will meet with indigenous communities and collaborate with Jesuit-run organizations and partners to learn about the people, their lives, and their faith. Surrounded by the incredible Amazon forest, students will engage in meaningful connections with the community, including participating in a homestay experience.

Guyana Immersion

"it brought me a lot closer to my faith, reminded me how comforting prayer is, made me realize the privilege I have, helped me understand another's way of life and what it means to be content. Go on the immersion! It is a true bonding experience and you learn more about yourself, meet the greatest people, and are immersed in a once in a lifetime opportunity" - Nidhi Bandrapalli
