Teams of mothers gather weekly to discuss issues facing their families as recent immigrants.
The Madres Discussion Group has become a place of collaboration and support for groups of mothers in the Washington Elementary School (WES) area. The physical space, a furnished portable on Washington Elementary School’s Campus, is a place where mothers can gather to learn, share, and receive support from each other. In addition, faculty members from the Spanish Department, Ignatian Center Staff, SCU students, and WES mothers hope to share in program activities (such as events, courses, and presentations) that reflect themes of faith and social justice with the larger aim of promoting the change needed to transform their shared reality. Some discussion topics include hispanic identity in America, family, religion and spirituality, traditions: old and new, education, and integration of cultures. Overall, the Madres Discussion Group is a place of welcome, growth, and accompaniment.
