The significant increase in videoconferencing over the past few weeks has now drawn the attention of hackers. Besides Zoombombing (disrupting Zooms with offensive material), hackers are now crafting fake Zoom invites and fake Zoom installers that contain malware. Additionally, because Zoom is recieving so much focused attention right now, security and privacy issues continue to crop up. Please read the following guidelines to help ensure your continued use of Zoom is safe and secure: 1. We recommend you always use caution before clicking on links or downloading any software. Zoom invite links should include the zoom.us domain. For example, all Zoom meetings created with SCU’s Zoom account will start with https://scu.zoom.us/j/ followed by a string of numbers. Zoom invites created by other organizations will follow a similar pattern, such as https://organization.zoom.us/. Zoom meeting invites do not include a software installer attached to the invite.
2. If you’ve previously used Zoom on your computer, the client is already installed. If you need to download the Zoom client, click here to get the software and set up your account.
3. Zoom regularly patches Zoom to close security gaps. You can check for updates to ensure you are running the latest version:
- To update your Zoom software on a Macintosh, open the Zoom client. If you are not sure where it is, use the magnifying glass in the top right menu bar to open Spotlight Search, and then search for Zoom. Once open, click on the "zoom.us" menu and select "Check for Updates". If an update is available, you will be prompted to install it.
- To update Zoom software on Windows, open the Zoom client. Once open, right-click on the zoom icon in the bottom right tray and select "Check for Updates". If an update is available, you will be prompted to install it.
- If you receive a message that auto-updates are disabled, follow the advice in step #2 above to download and install the Zoom software.
Thank you for helping us keep Santa Clara’s network safe and secure.
