October Awareness Events

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month! Check this page for information about our security events this month, including guest speakers and the annual shred truck. 

 

 

  • Elvis Chan - Oct 12th

    Elvis Chan is a cyberterrorism expert and Supervisory Special Agent with the FBI's National Cybersecurity Squad. He will be giving a talk on cybersecurity in the LC Viewing and Taping Room A at 7pm.

  • Cricket Liu - Oct 19th

    Cricket Liu is a leading expert on the Domain Name System, coauthor of DNS and BIND, and Chief DNS Architect at InfoBlox. He previously worked for HP for nearly 10 years, where he ran hp.com, one of the largest corporate domains in the world, and helped found HP's Internet consulting business. Cricket later co-founded his own Internet consulting and training company, Acme Byte & Wire. After Network Solutions acquired Acme Byte & Wire and later merged with VeriSign, Cricket became director of DNS Product Management. He will be giving a talk on DNS and Security in Sobrato Hall rooms B and C at 5:30pm on October 19th.

  • Kevin Mandia - Oct 24

    We will be joining the Leavey School of Business to hear our next speaker. Kevin Mandia began his career as an Air Force computer security officer in the Pentagon. He is now CEO of FireEye, the fastest growing cybersecurity firm in the country. In 2013, he published a vetted report in the New York Times “directly implicating China in cyber espionage” that received global notice and acclaim. He will be speaking on "Applying Values, Purpose and Courage to Combat Global Cyber Terrorism" on Tuesday, October 24, 5:30-6:30 PM in the de Saisset Museum.

  • Shredfest Shredding - Oct 26th

    Shredfest shredding is a mobile document shredding service. The shred truck will be on campus October 26th, 11:30 - 1:30. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to bring their sensitive documents to the truck to be destroyed. These documents may include tax information, bank statements, credit card offers, medical information, academic information, bills, unlaminated ID cards, legal documents, employment records, expired passports, credit reports, and any other document with sensitive information! Don't worry about folders, staples, envelopes, or paperclips, but be sure to remove paperwork from 3 ring binders.

  • William Bengtson - Oct 26

    William Bengston is a security researcher in Security Operations, Cloud and Platform Engineering at Netflix. Before coming to Netflix, he was a computer science lecturer, head of security at Nuna Inc., software security architect and pentester at Lockheed Martin, and senior security consultant at Cigital. His specialties include cloud security, AWS, software security, system architecture, threat modeling, infrastructure, red teaming, network security, and application security. He will be speaking on the Internet of Things in LLC Viewing and Taping Room A on Thursday, October 26th at 7PM.
