Leilani, Co-Director

Dr. Leilani Miller

Co-Director, Johnson Scholars Program

Leilani Miller wears many hats around Santa Clara University as the Co-Director of the Johnson Scholars Program, Director of the University Honors Program, LEAD scholar program, Office of Fellowships, and Associate Professor in Biology. As a Professor in Biology and honors courses, she provides just as many opportunities for scholars to learn in the classroom as outside; from accompanying Immersion trips to providing research assistant positions in her lab. Her research mainly focuses on how cells know to differentiate themselves using nematodes, transparent roundworms. Leilani has a B.S. from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.


 

Amy, Co-Director

Dr. Amy Shachter

Co-Director, Johnson Scholars Program

As Co-Director of the Johnson Scholars Program, Amy Shachter, along with Leilani, oversees the full award cycle process and all other facets of the Johnson Scholars Program . Currently the Senior Associate Provost for Research and Faculty Affairs, Amy has previously served the University as an associate professor in Chemistry, senior associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences and executive director of the University’s Environmental Studies Institute. She received her bachelor’s degree at Knox College and earned her Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Amy loves decaf black coffee, Golden Labrador Retrievers and once co-taught an Environmental Chemistry and Nature Writing course in the swamps, rainforests and beaches of Trinidad and Tobago.  


 

Bill Mains, Leadership Coordinator

Leadership Coordinator

As the Leadership Coordinator, Bill researches and assesses campus leadership programs across the United States to design and implement curriculum and an activity schedule to match the mission of the University Johnson Scholars Program.  In addition to his role with the Johnson Scholars, he is the Director of Sustainability and Leadership Development for the Business School’s Undergraduate Business Programs office and won the 2014 Staff Innovation Award for his work incorporating new perspectives and new approaches to the workplace. Bill grew up in Wisconsin, attended Carthage College for his undergrad and pursued graduate degrees in Counseling at Kent State University in Ohio and and Ethics & Social Theory at The Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. In his free time, Bill enjoys spending time with his family and friends, gardening, hiking and backpacking, reading, singing, and working in the wood shop with his brother. 


 

Kelly, Program Assistant

Kelly Uchiumi

Program Coordinator

Kelly joined the Johnson Scholars Program in 2015, and serves as the Program Coordinator. Her role includes supporting and developing the work of the Johnson Scholars Program including the award process, campus activities and planning the annual scholarship weekend. Kelly graduated from George Fox University in Oregon with a B.A. in global business and marketing. During university, she spent a semester studying world religions and business in India and a May term in Israel. A native Californian, Kelly has worked previously with a child advocacy nonprofit in Colorado Springs before realizing that as much as she loves the Rocky mountains, she loves living near the ocean. When not in the office you’ll find Kelly running, hiking in search of a waterfall, or reading in her hammock.
