Fr. Joseph Mueller
Dean, Associate Professor of Theology

Joseph Mueller, S.J., is the dean of Santa Clara University’s Jesuit School of Theology. Previously, Mueller was an associate professor of theology and an administrator at Marquette University for more than 20 years. During his tenure, he served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in Marquette University’s Helen Way Klingler College of Arts and Sciences and as Director of Graduate Studies and Assistant Chairman for the Department of Theology. In 2017, he was also named rector of Marquette University’s Jesuit Community. He represented the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for seven years on the Faith and Order Commission of the National Council of Churches of Christ.

Dean Mueller possesses a deep commitment to culturally contextualized theology. In addition to his B.A. in French and theology from Marquette, Mueller received an M.A. in philosophy from Loyola University of Chicago; a Master's of Divinity from Weston School of Theology (now part of Boston College); and his licentiate and doctorate in sacred theology from Centre Sèvres in Paris. He has also spent a semester as a visiting professor at the Institute of Theology of the Society of Jesus in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Mueller is the author of the French-language book The Old Testament in the Ecclesiology of Fathers, which analyzes a collection of ancient church administration sources known as the Apostolic Constitutions. In his scholarly work, he specializes in the study of early Christian theologians, especially those of the first five centuries, and of ancient and contemporary ideas on the nature, structure, and mission of the Church.

Ordained to the priesthood in 1993, Dean Mueller has worked in Jesuit educational institutions at every level, from serving in elementary schools to teaching graduate students, in North America, Europe, and Africa. As dean of JST, he is excited to form the next generation of lay and ordained ministers and to address the changing needs of the global Church.
