Sophia House Community

Fostering spiritual growth is central to the Woman of Wisdom and Action initiative. Alongside academic program, the initiative, as part of the Jesuit School of Theology, offers spiritual accompaniment, faith sharing, and networking with other students who are religious sisters and brothers, lay people, and candidates for the priesthood. In addition to opportunities for personal retreats, sisters have the possibility of optional summer training to become retreat leaders and spiritual directors.

The inter-congregational community, a home away from home, is the base for the spiritual and liturgical rhythm the sisters choose to create, enriched by common life and mutual support.

Sisters who travel to Berkeley to participate in the Women of Wisdom and Action initiative will be welcomed into an inter-congregational living space, Sophia House. They live together with other sisters from different parts of Asia, creating a new spiritual and human home away from home. Aided by a community facilitator, a religious herself who knows the Jesuit School of Theology and the surrounding Bay Area, the sisters who come together in this Women of Wisdom and Action community will become a supportive family to one another as they accompany each other through the program.

Through leadership development experiences, personal encounters, mentoring, and spiritual formation, the students will encounter and contextualize the rich experience of their immersion into U.S. religious life and culture.
