Master of Arts (M.A.)

Master of Arts (MA) Application Checklist for Domestic and International Students

The Master of Arts is an academic degree offered in cooperation with the member schools and Centers of the GTU. The program provides ecumenical and interreligious learning opportunities, and students have access to courses offered throughout the consortium, and many courses at UC Berkeley.

The MA student is required to affiliate with a member school, or a participating academic center or institute. The primary academic base for the MA is the school of affiliation, chosen according to study interests and/or denominational ties. Students select a specific academic concentration as the focus of their MA work.

In order to study in the Master of Arts (MA) program at JST-SCU, you must apply first to the Common MA program at the Graduate Theological Union. In your application and Statement of Purpose, you will declare JST as your desired school of affiliation, and then, if admitted to the GTU, the Admissions team will assign you your school of affiliation according to your intended course of study and faculty fit. Indicating JST-SCU as your school of choice does not guarantee that it will be assigned to you as your school of affiliation, but we encourage applicants to include their specific rationale for choosing it as such. For more information on how to apply to the GTU Common MA program, please see this page: https://www.gtu.edu/admissions/applying/ma-program.
