Bachelor of Sacred Theology (S.T.B.)

Application Checklist

  1. Completed & signed application for admission. You may complete this application online (click here to access to the online application) or you may print, fill out, and mail back the completed application to the Office of Admissions of JST.  You can request an application be mailed or emailed to you by contacting Laura Nieto at lnieto@scu.edu.

  2. Resume or curriculum vitae. Applicants for the STB program are required to submit a resume or curriculum vitae to provide information about relevant job experience and education.  Your resume should include educational background and relevant experiences, including jobs, internships, community service, activities, languages (if applicable), and research projects.  Writing a resume for a graduate school application follows the same principles as writing a resume for a job.  Please include dates of attendance for education, job titles, and years of employment.  You may mail this to the Office of Admissions of JST or email it to Laura Nieto at lnieto@scu.edu as a PDF or Word

  3. Bachelor of Sacred Theology essay. Applicants for the STB program are asked to submit a 750 word essay explaining why you are applying to JST for the STB degree.  Please address the following questions:

    • How does your prior ministerial experience prepare you for the STB program?
    • Why in particular is JST the place for you to be formed for ministerial work?
    • What are your plans for ministry after you complete the STB at JST?


    You may submit this through the online application, mail it to the Office of Admissions of JST, or email it to Laura Nieto at lnieto@scu.edu as a PDF or Word attachment.

  4. For Domestic Students: Official scores of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) taken within the last five years. Applicants for the STB program who take the GRE must provide acceptable scores to be considered for admission.  If you have already completed a master’s level degree, you do not need to submit GRE scores.  For information about the GRE, contact: Educational Testing Service (ETS) Corporate Headquarters, 660 Rosedale Road, Princeton, NJ 08541, USA, Phone 1-609-921-9000, or visit the GRE web site at gre.org.  The JST institutional code for the GRE is 4367.  Official scores should be sent directly from ETS to the Office of Admissions of JST.

    For International Students: Proficiency in English.  A high degree of proficiency in English is required for admission.  International students must demonstrate their ability to speak and write English.  The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required unless the applicant’s native language is English.  For information about the TOEFL, contact: Educational Testing Service (ETS) Corporate Headquarters, 660 Rosedale Road, Princeton, NJ 08541, USA, Phone 1-609-921-9000, or visit the TOEFL web site at www.toefl.org.  JST’s institutional code number for TOEFL is 4390.  Official scores should be sent directly from ETS to the Office of Admissions of JST.

  5. Official transcripts for all post-secondary academic work. Transcripts must arrive directly from the school at which you completed the coursework/degree.  An official transcript should list all of the courses you took as a student and the grade you received for each course.  This should be mailed from the institution of study directly to the Office of Admissions of

  6. Two letters of recommendation. If you choose to apply online, these forms can also be completed online by your recommenders; you will need to provide their name and email address within your online application.  Or, you may print, fill out, and sign the top portion of the Letter of Recommendation form and share the form with each separate recommender.  Please see pages 3 and 4 of the application for the recommendation

    Note: Please be sure to let your recommender know that he or she has to complete the form and write a letter to accompany the form.  Each recommender should then mail their completed form and letter directly to the Office of Admissions of JST.

    Note: Letters must address your academic qualifications for graduate level study.  Preferably these letters would be from persons who recently taught you.  If you have been out of school for an extended period of time, a recommendation from an employer, a professional colleague, or a church or community leader will be acceptable.  The second letter should directly address your ministerial qualifications for admission to the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University.

    For vowed religious: Please submit a letter of support from your religious superior indicating congregational support.

  7. Philosophy and Latin language requirement documentation. A prerequisite for the STB program is 24 semester hours of philosophy and a suitable knowledge of the Latin language. Applicants for the STB program should provide an official transcript of all completed philosophy and Latin language requirements. An official transcript should list all of the courses you took in these subject areas and the grade you received for each course. This can be mailed from the institution of study directly to The Office of Admissions of JST.
