Résumé or curriculum vitae. Applicants for the STB program are required to submit a résumé or curriculum vitae to provide information about relevant job experience and education. Your résumé should include educational background and relevant experiences, including jobs, internships, community service, activities, languages (if applicable), and research projects. Writing a résumé for a graduate school application follows the same principles as writing a résumé for a job. Please include dates of attendance for education, job titles, and years of employment. You may submit your résumé or curriculum vitae with your application on the online portal.
Bachelor of Sacred Theology essay. Applicants for the STB program are asked to submit a 750 word essay explaining why you are applying to JST for the STB degree. Please address the following questions:
- How does your prior ministerial experience prepare you for the STB program?
- Why in particular is JST the place for you to be formed for ministerial work?
- What are your plans for ministry after you complete the STB at JST?
You may submit your essay with your application on the online portal.
Standardized Test Requirements
For Domestic Students: Official scores of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) taken within the last five years.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) testing requirement has been waived for Fall 2020 applicants.
Applicants for the STB program who take the GRE must provide acceptable scores to be considered for admission. If you have already completed a master’s level degree, you do not need to submit GRE scores. For International Students: Proficiency in English.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we have temporarily approved the use of the Duolingo English test in addition to the TOEFL proficiency exam. The Duolingo test must be taken no later than May 15, 2020 to be considered for the Fall 2020 semester. When identifying which institution you would like your score sent to, please select “Santa Clara University Graduate Programs.”

Official transcripts for all post-secondary academic work. Official transcripts for all post-secondary academic work. Transcripts must arrive directly from the school at which you completed the coursework/degree. An official transcript should list all of the courses you took as a student and the grade you received for each course. We accept official transcripts by postal service or electronically. If arriving by mail, official transcripts must be sent from the institution of study directly to the JST Office of Admissions using the address listed below. Additionally, they must arrive in a sealed envelope and bear the authorizing signature and the official seal of the issuing institution. Electronic submission of official transcripts is preferred. We accept official e-transcripts delivered securely by your institution or their service partner through: Parchment, Credential Solutions (eScriptSafe), or National Student Clearing House. Official electronic transcripts should be sent to: email@example.com.
Additionally, transcripts from schools outside the U.S. must be in English or, if in the native language, accompanied by English translations.

Two letters of recommendation. These forms can also be completed online by your recommenders; you will need to provide their name and email address within your online application.
Note: Letters must address your academic qualifications for graduate level study. Preferably these letters would be from persons who recently taught you. If you have been out of school for an extended period of time, a recommendation from an employer, a professional colleague, or a church or community leader will be acceptable. The second letter should directly address your ministerial qualifications for admission to the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University.
For vowed religious: Please submit a letter of support from your religious superior indicating congregational support.
Philosophy and Latin language requirement documentation. A prerequisite for the STB program is 24 semester hours of philosophy and a suitable knowledge of the Latin language. Applicants for the STB program should provide an official transcript of all completed philosophy and Latin language requirements. An official transcript should list all of the courses you took in these subject areas and the grade you received for each course. This can be mailed from the institution of study directly to The Office of Admissions of JST.
