"My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone."

JST Community Night | "Thomas Merton in California: The Redwoods Conferences and Letters" with Dr. David Odorisio
Tuesday, April 30 | Following the 5:15 PM Liturgy
|
 |
In May and October of 1968, Trappist monk and spiritual author, Thomas Merton, offered two extended conferences at Our Lady of the Redwoods Abbey. Comprising over twenty-six hours of previously unpublished material, Merton’s California conferences cover a variety of topics.
|
|
This presentation contextualizes Merton’s California conferences within the wider scope of his thought, with particular attention to patristic and medieval theological anthropology, and Merton’s notion of the true and the false self. Merton offers a unique approach to inter-religious praxis that, while built upon a comparative approach to mystical traditions, aims toward the transformation of the self in a way that is remarkably integrated with traditional patristic and medieval Cistercian notions of divinization.

Congrats to JST Alum and current GTU PhD student Alberto Honegan, who wrote the following article on Our Lady, Mother of Ferguson and All Those Killed by Gun Violence, published in the journal "Black Theology" at the University of Oxford.
|
|
Alberto writes: "I’m thankful to God, Our Lady, and you [Deacon Mark Doox] for this work that shines more light on the fight against evil, violence, racism, and hate. I come back to Our Lady of Ferguson regularly in prayer, especially with the conflicts and oppression going on around the world. I feel our Ferguson Mother of God vigilando with us. Hallelujah!! 🙏🏿 "

On Tuesday, April 30, the 5:15 PM liturgy will draw upon the Zaire Use of the Roman Rite. The adaptation, while simplified in various ways, will include the role of an announcer, who calls the congregation into specific moments of the liturgy, two brief processions at the entrance, offertory, and a few other specific ways of reflecting cultural norms. For example, the liturgy will begin with an invocation of saints and ancestors. Similarly, during the proclamation of the Gospel, the congregation will remain seated, a posture reflecting the disposition of a respectful listener. The sign of peace will be offered prior to the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
On Wednesday, the evening liturgy will be celebrated in French.
On Thursday, Brendan Coffey will preach when serving as Deacon.
Friday evening’s liturgy will contribute to the conclusion of the Conference on Women and Synodality.
On May 4, 5 PM, all interested are invited to Adoration in the chapel. Deacon Elvis Fru will preside at Benediction that evening.

CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) Short-Term Therapy CAPS continues to offer short-term therapy. The basic steps to getting started in CAPS are outlined below, and the CAPS website has more detailed information on short-term therapy services:
- First Step: Phone consultation. Students can call 408-554-4501 to schedule a phone consultation, which takes 15-25 minutes. During this call, CAPS staff assess if the therapeutic support a student is seeking fits within the short-term therapy model at CAPS. Collaboratively, the therapist and student will determine next steps.
- If short-term therapy is recommended, a CAPS therapist will then reach out to the student to schedule a 50 minute intake appointment via the SCU Health Portal.
- If referral to an off-campus therapist or services is recommended, an appointment with the Cowell Center Clinical Case Manager will be offered to support the referral process.
*Reminder: There are no limits on the number of therapy sessions and no fees at CAPS, but services are designed to be short-term.
Our JST CAPS Liaison, Estrella and Gaurie, will be at JST on February 7th. Come meet them to learn more about this resource!
