Dr. Byron Howlett
LEAD Seminar Instructor

Byron (pronouns: he/him/his) was born in San Antonio, Texas but primarily raised in South Central Los Angeles. Byron earned his B.A. degree in Geography from UCLA, M.A. degree in Educational Psychology from California State University San Bernardino, and his Ed.D. degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of La Verne.  For the past 30 years, Byron has worked his entire professional career in Higher Education primarily within the state of California.  He has worked in the UC system, CSU system, and Private Higher Education universities from small campuses like the University of La Verne to large campuses such as USC.  Byron has also had the amazing opportunity to sail around the world three different times with the Semester At Sea program.

Byron works as an Assistant Dean in the Office of Student Life located in Benson 205.  Byron’s responsibilities as Assistant Dean include overseeing the Office for Multicultural Learning, working with student conduct concerns, working with student welfare concerns, and addressing campus climate and bias related incidents on campus.  In his role as Assistant Dean of Student Life (Campus Climate), Byron is excited to help students navigate all facets of Santa Clara University in order to create their best educational experience.

Byron is committed to serving first-generation college students/LEAD Scholars because he was a first-generation student at UCLA and participated in a program similar to LEAD Scholars.  Byron knows what it is like to arrive on a university campus, and not know what to do or who to turn to when help is needed.  Byron is excited to use his first-hand, first-generation experience to support our LEAD Scholars through their personal college journeys.
