Where did you attend college?
University of Michigan
What was your college experience like as a first-generation college student?
There were moments in college that made me feel like the road to graduation was an endless, uphill climb... With a refrigerator on my back. Awkward conversations in the Financial Aid Office, an off campus job working 24 hrs/wk, out of touch roommates and uncertainties with navigating the academic landscape were a fraction of my experiences as first-gen.
Luckily, it wasn't all doom and gloom. I found students with similar experiences to mine and university staff/faculty that cared about my success. With these mentors, friends, professors and advisors behind me, I reached the top of Graduation Mountain.
What message do you have to share with current first-generation college students?
Find your support. Whether it be older students, student groups, instructors, or even RLC custodial staff, identify the people who want to see you succeed. These folx will be your comfort and encouragement; your home away from home.
