Major and Minor

Santa Clara University, California's oldest institution of higher learning and the birthplace of Italian Studies in the western United States, was founded by two Italian Jesuits in 1851 and began offering instruction in Italian that same year. Now in our second century, our Italian curriculum offers a good balance between language and culture.

MAJOR – minimum of 40 Upper Division Units

As part of the 40 units, the following courses must be included:

  • Italian 100 or dept. approved substitution
  • Italian 101 or dept. approved substitution
  • Remaining units taken in upper division coursework taught in Italian
  • 20 Units taken at SCU or taught by SCU Faculty
  • Maintain a grade point average of 2.0 in major

MINOR – minimum of 19 Upper Division Units

As part of the 19 units, the following courses must be included:

  • Italian 100 or dept. approved substitution
  • Italian 101 or dept. approved substitution
  • Remaining units taken in upper division coursework taught in Italian
  • 10 units taken at SCU or taught by SCU faculty
  • Maintain a grade point average of 2.0 in minor
  •  Studying abroad in Italy is highly recommended, but not required.
