Placement Exam

How to determine the language course level that’s right for you...

Placement testing is the best way to determine which level language course is most appropriate for you. The Dept. of Modern Languages & Literatures offers placement tests in Arabic, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish.

All students will need to take a placement test prior to taking their first language course here at SCU. The only exception is for students who have never studied or had any significant experience (e.g. home language, short or long term study or live abroad, etc.) with the language they intend to study. Students who have had ZERO prior experience with their intended language need only to register in the Elementary level 1 course of that language- no placement test is needed.

Our language placement test is an online assessment that you will take on your own during the announced testing window. Since placement test results are valid for one year after testing, we recommend that you take the test in the spring or summer prior to the year you intend to begin your language studies at SCU. This is because not all levels of language courses are offered each quarter. If you wait to test mid year, then you could risk placing into a course that was already offered and won’t be offered again until the following fall or winter, and since second language proficiency weakens without practice over time, the delay could significantly impact your chances for success in the course. Special Note: Results from the placement test will NOT satisfy the SCU Core Language Requirement. Results are only valid for identifying the most appropriate language course for you to take based on your skill level.
