What Are You Thankful For?

SCU students share the things they're most thankful for.

Erin Gates ’17
Computer Science

I’m thankful for freedom in Christ. I’m thankful for people with infectious laughter or smiles. And for things that are simultaneously beautiful and practical. Like a really shiny 6” ruler I have that is a beautiful shade of emerald green and is made with stainless steel and has a cork bottom so it doesn’t slip.

Jesus. God’s grace to sinners who are undeserving of His mercy. Family. Friends. Housemates. People in my classes who will cover for me when I’m sick. Merciful teachers. Challenging professors. Food. #Benson. Pony Express. The opportunity to attend school on this beautiful campus. Mentors. The Dallas Cowboys. Dak Prescott. Ezekiel Elliott. Friend who take me to the gym and get me outdoors. Naptime. Good movies. Good superhero movies. Water fountain dispensers.

JJ Kwong ’18

Relationships. Kevin Durant. Friendships. Having people in your life to talk to. For advice. That’s valuable. I just like basketball.

Shannen Edwin ’19

Community. Family. Good school. Friends. Because I know what it’s like to not have community and it sucks. I have good parents. They don’t do anything bad to me. I know what it’s like to not have friends.

Esther Bartlett ’18

My friends. I know that’s cliche, but I’m so proud of them. Because they have taken their situations in life and used it in ways that nobody could have fathomed for such a positive result.

My relationships with my family and my friends. God has blessed me with a lot of amazing people in my life who are always so uplifting and who are blessings. They do little things for me just to encourage me every day and support me. Little things like texting me randomly or giving me small gifts or words of encouragement all the time. What makes people amazing: They’re so full of love, and they just like to love on people all the time.

I’m thankful for living in a time when we have access to different opinions than our own and that we have people who are patient and willing to engage in civil discussion and think of the common good.

I am immensely grateful for the the opportunity to obtain an education a Santa Clara University. Growing up, the expectations from the majority of my teachers, starting in elementary, were very low. Now, the number of opportunities opened to me are greater than I could imagined. However, this education was only possible due to the unconditional support from my family and friends—for that, I will always be grateful.

I’m thankful for my family. I think being away from them has made me appreciate even more how good they are to me and how much I appreciate their love and support. And food. I’m thankful for marriage. What I’m really thankful for is love - that’s what I always talk about.

Joy Yusufzai ’18

I’m thankful for professors who have grace. I’m thankful that I know a lot of really generous people. I’m thankful that time moves at the pace it does - sometimes I wish it would go faster, sometimes I wish it would go slower—but I'm glad I’m not in charge of what pace it moves at.

Tori Brown ’20

I’m thankful for Kairos and the people I met on the retreat that changed my life.

Veronica Ybarra ’17

I am thankful to have a relationship with God. I am thankful to have known Him since I was young and understand his goodness and the wonderful ways that He continues to build me as His daughter.  I am thankful to know a Father who is willing to sacrifice his only begotten Son in order to show me the light and allow me to live a life that is wholesome and blessed.

I'm thankful for those who walk alongside me in life. I feel like that may be deemed as cliche. But there are people who have seen me at my worst. They've seen me when I have been demoralizing and hurtful. These are people who I have not only upset yet I have pushed away. I have purposely asked for them not to care yet they've refused to just allow me to fail, they've refused to allow me to hurt. I want to say I'm thankful for friends and family which is really true but it's deeper than that. I'm thankful for the relationships that I've been blessed with. I'm thankful for the ways that these relationships have shaped me and have allowed to become the person that I'm meant to be. I'm thankful that there are people in my life who are willing to fight good fight for me and help me come to a place where I have no choice but to know and understand that I am loved, fully and completely by those who surround me. They see a small spark in me and they're not willing to allow me to lose that, they're willing to help me grow that into a flame.

One of the first things that comes to mind when I think about thankfulness is life itself. I am so thankful to be alive, to be human, to have the ability to feel and to love and to just be. It's easy to get caught up in the mess of living sometimes and to forget the beauty that comes with simply being alive and on this earth and waking up each day with lungs full of air and a heart full of hope.

I am incredibly thankful for so much; for my dedicated mother, for my arduously-working father, for my patient twin brother, for my inspiring and ever-most-loving friends, for my incredible roommate, for the people who have shaken me awake and changed my life for better and for good. For my health, for a horizon filled with endless possibilities, for the roses and the thorns and the sunshine that keeps them growing. For every decision I have ever made, for my growing faith, for the presence of God in all the goodness around me, for run-on sentences and the freedom to be who I am.

I am thankful for the ups, the downs, the in-betweens. I am thankful for it all.
