Board of Trustees Meeting, October 2017
I wish to share with you brief highlights from the Fall Board of Trustees meeting that was held on October 19-20. We welcomed two newly appointed trustees, Ronnie Lott, Hon. ‘04, and Jon Aboitiz ‘70, as well as Bryan Neider ‘78, who will serve an ex officio role as Chair of the Board of Regents. In business matters, the Trustees approved a series of action items that came recommended by the respective Trustee committees. The following were approved by the Board:
- Amendments to the Faculty Handbook - Criteria for Reconsideration of Negative Tenure, Promotion, or Reappointment Decision (Sects. 3.4.8, 3.4A.1.4, and 3.4A.2.4). These amendments followed the shared governance process where they were endorsed by the University Faculty Affairs Committee and in a vote by the faculty.
- Discontinuation of the Major in German. This proposal followed the shared governance process where the University Academic Affairs Committee voted to recommend it to the Board.
- Acceptance of the Audit Report
We had the privilege of hosting the Provincial of Jesuits West, Scott Santarosa, S.J.,’88, who gave a presentation on the state of the Jesuits West Province. Members of the Cabinet and I also reported on a variety of topics including the long-term vision of the University, the progress on the Integrated Strategic Plan, the role of the Trustees in supporting the vision, and the progress on the campaign ($437M raised to date). In other reports, Bryan Neider provided an update on the work of the Board of Regents that included a proposal to establish a Regent's Speaker Series. Jack Herstam, Associated Student Government President, prepared a written report on the ASG. Prior to the meeting, Faculty Senate President Bill Sundstrom reported there were no updates since the June Trustee meeting and would give a report at the Winter Trustee meeting.
