Peter Pierson - Rest in Peace
Dear SCU Community,
With a heavy heart I share the news that Peter Pierson, emeritus faculty in history passed away February 17. Along with his sister, Susan Burns, we mourn the loss of our friend and colleague who dedicated decades of service to Santa Clara University.
Peter joined the history faculty at Santa Clara in 1966 as a scholar in Spanish history with a focus on 16th Century Spain and military history. By the time he retired from the classroom in 2000, he had taught thousands of students in courses on European history, society and culture; Renaissance and Reformation; war and society; and numerous other subjects. A prolific writer, he wrote several major scholarly works including Phillip II of Spain, The History of Spain, and Commander of the Armada: The Seventh Duke of Medina Sidonia. His professional activity was notable, having served as a Fulbright Scholar in Spain and as a recipient of numerous research
grants and fellowships.
Peter embodied the teacher scholar and held the Lee and Seymour Graff Endowed Chair. In 1996, he was named the Faculty Senate Professor, which was a testament to his commitment to students, love of teaching, scholarly contributions, and generous service to the University. Perhaps less well-known was his passion as an artist. The Adobe Lodge is graced with several of Peter’s paintings, symbols of his legacy that we will continue to cherish.
Notes of condolence can be sent to Susan Burns care of the History Department:
