    Welcome

    Dear Faculty and Staff,

Let me repeat my welcome, first expressed at the Convocation on Tuesday, 13 September. I hope your new academic year has started on a positive note that continues through all three quarters. A special welcome goes to Dennis Jacobs, our new Provost, Father Bill Rewak, S.J., our new Chancellor, and Father Mick McCarthy, S.J., our new Executive Director of the Ignatian Center.

This year I am particularly interested in progress on the Task Force on Teacher Evaluations, the Dependent Care Study, the Council on Inclusive Excellence, and the recommendations put forward by the Task Force on Governance. Other areas of focus will be the search for two deans, one for the Jesuit School of Theology and one for the School of Education and Counseling Psychology; and identifying strategic plan priorities as we move to the next stage of our strategic planning process. For more about updates and priorities for the year, view a recording of the Convocation on the President's Office web site.

This will be a full year, and I look forward to working with all of you in making it another successful year for Santa Clara.

    Mass of the Holy Spirit

On Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at 12:00 p.m. in the Mission Church, we will celebrate our annual Mass of the Holy Spirit, followed by a picnic lunch on the St. Ignatius Lawn, weather permitting. At this special liturgy, Santa Clara will continue the centuries-old tradition among Catholic schools of calling upon the Holy Spirit to guide us in our work throughout the academic year. We ask God to bless us all as we work alongside God and share in this mighty enterprise of ongoing creation for the good of all.

To enable the campus community to attend the Mass of the Holy Spirit, classes will not meet between 11:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. that day.  Classes that usually meet from 11:45 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. will be canceled.  Classes scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. will instead begin at 1:15 p.m.  Please note that classes in the School of Law will meet as scheduled.

Our Eucharistic celebration is one of thanksgiving in which we share our gratitude for God and for one another. We are grateful for the spiritual and religious diversity of our community and hope this liturgy will echo the hopes of all in our community. We welcome one and all to join us for this cherished tradition.

    Grand Reunion Weekend

As we begin the new school year, I would like to remind everyone about the Grand Reunion Weekend being held on campus from Thursday, October 6 through Sunday, October 9.

In its third year, the Grand Reunion Weekend will consist of thirteen undergraduate classes celebrating together. From the class of 1951 to our most recent graduates in the class of 2011, we expect to host over 3,000 SCU alumni, family, and friends during the four reunion days. The Reunion Weekend schedule includes a variety of events, which you are invited and encouraged to attend.

Future Grand Reunion Weekends are planned for the second weekend in October for the next several years. We ask that you do not plan any events on campus during these weekends that are not part of the Grand Reunion schedule.

    • October 11-14, 2012
    • October 10-13, 2013
    • October 9-12, 2014
    • October 8-11, 2015

There are currently over 20 departments and groups on campus who are involved in the 60 plus events taking place during this year’s weekend. If you have any events you would like to be considered for future Grand Reunion Weekend schedules, or if you have any events planned for this year that the Alumni Office is not aware of, please contact Maureen Muscat in the Alumni Office.

    Board of Trustees Meeting

On October 21, I will join the Santa Clara University Board of Trustees as we convene our fall meeting, part of which will be a special session on our Catholic, Jesuit mission and identity. Father Mick McCarthy, S.J., Executive Director of the Ignatian Center, will present the first of a three part series, "Education as Spiritual Exercises."  The series is in response to the expressed interest among our trustees for greater understanding of our educational traditions and practices. Father McCarthy will continue with additional presentations at the February and June meetings of the Trustees. For a full list of the members of the University's board, visit the SCU Trustees webpage.
