January Update from the Presidential Search Committee

Dear Members of the Santa Clara University Community,

The Presidential Search Committee continues its efforts to identify the next President of Santa Clara University. As you know, a core component of this process has been to collect input from hundreds of engaged individuals and stakeholder groups from across the University community. Our final outreach meeting, a second meeting with student leaders, took place last Friday, which was both cordial and productive. In addition to hearing the students' views on the outreach questions, the search committee offered to include two student leaders in the conversations outlined below with the finalist candidates, and the University agreed to revisit its search protocol processes prior to the end of the academic year. For a full list of stakeholders that the Presidential Search Committee has engaged to date, please visit the Presidential Search Website.

The input that the committee has collected over the past months has been invaluable in identifying the desired attributes of SCU’s 29thPresident and the many reasons why SCU is a compelling destination for a talented and visionary Jesuit leader. This feedback has been compiled into a Presidential Search Profile, which is a key tool in our recruitment process. In addition to sharing the Presidential Search Profile with you, we will also share it with alumni, parents, and other stakeholders who have been instrumental in this effort.

What’s Ahead?

To date, we have received a number of highly-qualified candidate recommendations from our community members. Candidates have also proactively reached out to the search committee to express their interest. We are encouraged by the level of interest and the caliber of the current candidate pool, which includes individuals with extensive and relevant background from other prestigious universities.

The search committee has begun the first round of interviews. It is anticipated that the finalist(s) will be brought back for a second set of interviews by the search committee in early to mid-February. This process will likely include conversations with some or all of the members of the leadership team, Deans, Center Directors, presidents of the Staff and Faculty senates, Chair of the Student Senate and President of the Associated Student Government.  Our hope is to have the search committee’s final recommendation to the Board of Trustees by the end of March, although that timing could always change.  The Board of Trustees will then make the selection decision consistent with the governance provisions of the University's bylaws.

As we move into this phase, we appreciate your understanding that a confidential process is critical to the success of this search. Most (if not all) qualified candidates will not consent to a public interview process for fear of jeopardizing their current positions and relationships.  Members of the search committee have agreed to confidentiality of the candidates.

We remain committed to providing regular updates to our community about the search progress, including providing updates on timing.  In the meantime, if you have any questions about this process, or wish to share additional feedback, please contact us at presidentialsearch@scu.edu. We continue to welcome your questions and input.

Sincerely,

John M. Sobrato, ‘83
