SCU’s 29th President will build on our legacy, as well as our recent achievements, to lead the University into the future as we prepare a growing body of students for lives of engaged leadership, intellectual curiosity, entrepreneurship, and service to others.
At SCU, we are driven by our commitment to serve others, so that together we build a more just, sustainable, and humane world. Our Jesuit character and teachings are infused in our curricula, but, more importantly, in our values, way of life, and vision for the future. The University’s next President will forge a bold vision for the future, one deeply rooted in our Jesuit intellectual and spiritual heritage, as together we help shape the next generation of leaders and global thinkers.
The position of SCU President offers a compelling opportunity for an accomplished and visionary Jesuit leader for many reasons, including:

SCU has evolved in ways that likely would have been unimaginable to our founders. Today, the University finds itself at a remarkable intersection: the convergence of history and place, with great new challenges and remarkable opportunities. With our Jesuit identity amidst Silicon Valley\'92s culture of innovation, SCU is poised to redefine values-based higher education focused on ethics and social justice.
The University’s next President will join SCU at a time of significant momentum. This is an exciting inflection point for SCU, with many accomplishments behind us, and just as many opportunities ahead.
Today, SCU is recognized as one of the top Catholic universities in the United States, and recently was named by U.S.News & World Report as the Best Regional University in the West. The University offers 9,000 students rigorous undergraduate curricula in arts and sciences, business, and engineering; masters’ degrees in business, education, counseling psychology, pastoral ministries, and law; as well as theology and engineering doctoral degrees.
Santa Clara 2020
Since 2011, SCU has made progress in executing Santa Clara 2020, the University’s integrated strategic plan. The plan incorporates SCU’s enrollment, facilities, and strategic aspirations. Honoring the University’s historical mission while building upon its current strengths and emerging opportunities, Santa Clara 2020 has six main goals:

- Fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in service to humanity

SCU’s next President will play an essential role in ensuring the University continues to achieve the Santa Clara 2020 goals, while setting an ever-ambitious vision for the future.
Over the past 10 years, the University has attained new levels of academic achievement. We have expanded our academic offerings by creating nearly 20 new degrees, certificates, and online degree programs, and we have increased the size, diversity, and caliber of our student body. Many of our academic programs have been ranked among the top ones in the country.

SCU’s undergraduate students have demonstrated they are among the best in the nation, as illustrated by a number of recent national awards:
- SCU’s student Ethics Bowl team prevailed over more than 200 other colleges and universities last year to win the 22nd annual Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Championship.
- In five of the last six years, Santa Clara University has been named a top producer of Fulbright awards. In 2018, eight Santa Clara students or recent alumni were selected as Fulbright Scholars.
- Sean Reilly, SCU Class of 2016, was selected to be one of 32 American Rhodes Scholars for 2018. Sean is the third Santa Clara graduate to receive a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship in the past nine years.
- Hayley Raquer, a biology major from the SCU Class of 2016, was selected to be in the inaugural class of Stanford University’s Knight-Hennessy Scholars, a program modeled after the Rhodes Scholarship, with the aim of recruiting and providing full funding to the best and brightest students from around the world to pursue graduate studies at Stanford University.
With prudent planning, budgeting, and expense reduction across the University, SCU remains on solid financial footing. SCU’s endowment has nearly doubled, from $515 million in 2009 to $926 million in 2018. Within the current eight-year $1 billion comprehensive campaign, SCU has already raised $558 million in the first four years. In 2017, Moody’s Investors Service downgraded many American higher educational institutions but not Santa Clara, which retained its credit rating at Aa3/Stable Outlook.
Our sound financial position has allowed SCU to continue to invest in improvements that enhance our academic offerings and campus community. The University’s largest-ever gift, $100 million from John A. and Susan Sobrato, leads our fundraising for the 275,000-square-foot Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation. This “campus within a campus” is designed to promote cross-disciplinary exploration between engineering and the natural sciences.
It will accelerate the achievement of SCU’s vision and goals for STEM education, which emphasizes developing technical expertise, an entrepreneurial mindset, ethical reasoning, and collaborative approaches to tackling society’s most urgent challenges.
Since 2009, SCU has also developed and renovated approximately 900,000 gross square feet of new learning and program space – one-third of the entire campus – and updated classrooms, facilities, and technology infrastructure across our campus.
SCU’s next President will be called upon to build on past successes and mobilize the University to new heights of academic achievement, while contributing to a more just and humane world in the Jesuit tradition.
SCU: Key Undergraduate Facts
Undergraduate applications have grown by 60% over the past 10 years. For the Class of 2022, SCU welcomed 1,396 first-year students from a pool of over 16,000 applicants. These students come from 43 states and 27 countries, and include 158 transfer students.
This year, 87% of SCU first-year students were in the top 25% of their high school classes, up from 85% last year.
SCU achieved a 95% retention rate for all first-year students.
The four-year graduation rate of Santa Clara undergraduate students who entered in 2014 was 87.9% — the highest rate among comprehensive universities nationally. We recently achieved our highest five-year and six-year graduation rates on record — 90.5% for the six-year cohort (entering in 2012), and 90.2% for the five-year cohort (entering in 2013).
In 2018, SCU was ranked first among regional universities in the West by U.S. News & World Report.
STUDENT-CENTERED TEACHING AND LEARNING
At SCU, 47% of undergraduate classes have fewer than 20 students.
With 20 intercollegiate sports, Santa Clara’s Division I teams have a history of excellence in the West Coast Conference and on the national stage, with national championships and student-athletes going on to become All-Americans, Olympians, World Cup champions, and Hall of Famers. With the building of the Stephen C. and Patricia A. Schott Athletic Excellence Center, student athletes will have a new dedicated space to work out, train, practice, eat, and study together—while also opening up much-needed facility options for events and for all students participating in club and intramural sports.
Established in 1777 by Father Junipero Serra, Mission Santa Clara de Asís was the eighth of the 21 original California missions. SCU’s campus was built around the Mission, and, to this day, it remains our anchor and spiritual center.
Our school, originally named “Santa Clara College,” began in 1851 as an all-boys preparatory school. Santa Clara started offering college courses in 1853, and, by 1875, enrolled more than 275 students at the preparatory and collegiate levels.
With the addition of law and engineering schools, the College became “The University of Santa Clara” in 1912. The Leavey School of Business opened in 1926, and, within a decade, it became one of the first business schools in the country to receive national accreditation
In 1961, the University admitted 75 female undergraduates, becoming the first Catholic coeducational university in California.
In 1985, the University adopted Santa Clara University as its official name. Today, SCU enrolls 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students from all over the world and offers more than 50 majors, minors, and programs.
Central to our history and mission is our ongoing and unrelenting commitment to Jesuit values. The University continues to adapt and evolve to meet the changing needs of students, community, and the world. SCU’s next President will lead the University into the future as we shape the next generation of leaders and global thinkers.

SCU challenges our students to move out of the classroom and contribute to the community. We also challenge our students to understand the moral and ethical implications of their academic work and to bring creativity to bear in solving real-world problems.

Campus and Location
Located 40 miles south of San Francisco in California’s Silicon Valley, SCU has built a university community that distinctly blends entrepreneurialism and innovation with a 167-year commitment to faith-inspired values of ethics and social justice.
Silicon Valley, the area that runs south of San Francisco through the city of San Jose, is known globally as a place where ideas are born. Many of the most significant scientific and technological advances of our age have come from this region—in computing, as well as a broad range of fields from medicine to law. SCU’s Silicon Valley location contributes significantly to making the University a growing center for technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Our students benefit from being immersed in the innovation, energy, and opportunity of Silicon Valley, and from faculty, internship, and study opportunities that draw from businesses in the area.
Our campus spans 106 lush acres with world-renowned gardens and beautiful, state-of-the-art facilities surrounding our iconic Mission. The campus is adjacent to San Jose, the 10th largest city in the United States, and is a short drive to the beaches of Santa Cruz and to San Francisco, situating us in one of the most culturally and environmentally diverse regions in the world.
SCU Engagement in the World
Integral to our mission is a deep and ongoing engagement with the surrounding communities in Silicon Valley and well beyond. SCU’s community programs, activities, and initiatives are distinct in that they help strengthen the connection between the University, our neighbors, and our world, while creating opportunities for all SCU students to learn, serve, and grow.
SCU plays a unique and vital role in Silicon Valley. The Thriving Neighbors Initiative of the University’s Ignatian Center and the Leavey School’s My Own Business Institute run a joint program aimed at creating new businesses in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods within San Jose. The University also operates the Entrepreneurs’ Law Clinic to deliver quality legal services to area entrepreneurs.
SCU welcomes our neighbors to experience our campus culture through a varied list of enrichment programs and public events, such as exhibits, performances, athletics, and public forums featuring some of Silicon Valley’s most notable visionaries–often our own alumni.
The global community is also central to SCU’s culture and curriculum. Our quest to understand and interpret global issues permeates our academic programs. For example, Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship is the largest and most successful university-based social-enterprise accelerator in the world. Over the past twenty years, Miller Center has mentored more than 900 social enterprises, which, in turn, have positively impacted more than 320 million lives in developing countries. The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics is the largest applied-ethics center in the nation, with over ten focus areas, including business ethics, government ethics, internet ethics, and bioethics. In addition, our Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley established and is expanding a Global Theology Initiative that connects us more deeply with the six other Jesuit-sponsored, English-speaking theology centers in Manila, Nairobi, Toronto, Boston, New Delhi, and Pune.
We view it as our responsibility to transform the way students see the world and their places in it. Grounded in ethics and social justice, an SCU education empowers students to help find solutions to global problems and effect change in their communities.
SCU offers students more than 50 majors, minors, and special programs for law and teaching. Our graduate programs span business, engineering, education, counseling psychology, law, theology, and pastoral ministries.

The College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering, and the Leavey School of Business offer undergraduate degrees. All SCU schools have graduate programs.
All of our schools and the College have activities that include a focus on global learning and social justice. Over one-third of our students participate in at least one program abroad during their time at SCU. SCU also offers minors in International Business and International Studies, as well as a full range of study abroad options to grow our students’ global perspectives.
Complementing our academic programs, SCU Athletics is a key component of the Jesuit philosophy of the education of the whole person – body, mind, and spirit. Through participation in intercollegiate athletics and recreation, students will learn critical life lessons and values, including sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, overcoming adversity, preparation, trust in others, and selflessness, to name just a few. Santa Clara Bronco teams are competitive within their conferences and the region, and strive to be competitive nationally.
Centers of Distinction
SCU has three Centers of Distinction that encourage the pursuit of knowledge in service of humanity and create opportunities to share our Jesuit values and talents within SCU, throughout our communities, and around the world.
- Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education: Brings together SCU’s most characteristically Jesuit programs to communicate and share our core values both on and off campus. The Center also sponsors neighborhood engagement and immersion projects throughout the surrounding communities and the world.
- Markkula Center for Applied Ethics: Supports campus engagement with ethical issues and brings the University’s resources to bear on real-world problems faced by individuals and organizations in Silicon Valley and around the world.
- Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship: Focuses on accelerating global, innovation-based entrepreneurship in service to humanity.
At the Center of Innovation
SCU is distinct in its blending of a 167-year commitment to faith-inspired values of ethics and social justice, with an ongoing focus on entrepreneurship and innovation. The University’s Silicon Valley location puts students in the heart of a global center for advanced technology and innovation. SCU students learn from professors who are business leaders and entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley, as well as from real-world internships that give them direct, hands-on experience in emerging technologies.
The addition of the Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation will further student opportunities to grow technical expertise, an entrepreneurial mindset, and collaborative approaches to tackling society’s most urgent challenges. In addition, the College of Arts and Sciences launched the REAL program, allocating over half a million dollars to fund 127 undergraduate students in summer 2018 as they pursued creative work, undergraduate research, paid internships, or individualized projects of their own choosing.
SCU’s next President will collaborate with and lead exceptional faculty that include award-winning writers, artists, scientists, economists, and established business leaders and entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley.
Our faculty and staff stand out in higher education not only for their achievements and passion for teaching, but also for their unrelenting commitment to students.
What makes SCU faculty particularly distinguished— and vital to our institution—is their ability to conduct in-depth scholarship at a very high level, while providing close, individual attention to students. SCU professors are widely recognized for their research—from studying dark matter, to investigating breakthroughs in nanotechnology, to developing a sound map for the San Francisco Bay Area. Together with students, SCU faculty look for answers to the biggest questions in the universe—and the smallest.
The University regularly evaluates our offerings to faculty and staff to ensure we provide competitive compensation and benefits, as well as rewarding professional opportunities. This year, SCU implemented a number of important enhancements, including equity adjustments in salaries, funding for promotions, and the first phase of adjustments to staff compensation to make our salaries more competitive.
SCU is located in one of the most appealing – but most expensive – regions in the world. This location results in a high cost of living, particularly for housing, for our faculty and staff. In recent years, the University has made considerable progress in developing more affordable housing opportunities for faculty and staff. This effort has included expanding transitional rental housing options, rolling out a new rental assistance program, and introducing a shared-equity, down-payment program. We have more work to do in this important area, and it will remain a high priority for the University’s next President.
SCU deeply values our faculty and staff and their essential contributions to our campus community. The next President will play an essential role in ensuring that all of our talented faculty and staff continue to receive the recognition, respect and appreciation they deserve, and that they maintain their voice in critical decisions impacting our students’ education and the University at large.
To that end, in 2016, President Michael E. Engh, S.J. convened a Blue Ribbon Commission on Diversity and Inclusion that included campus representatives, alumni, and community leaders. The group was charged with creating an aspirational vision to advance diversity and inclusion at SCU, and to recommend strategies for transformational change to make SCU a more diverse, compassionate, and just university.
Following the work of the Blue Ribbon Commission, the University developed a formal Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion to develop a strategy for implementation. The Task Force consisted of members from the faculty, staff, and student communities. One outcome of this effort was the recently completed Campus Climate Survey. The survey provides timely and insightful data and input to further improve our University culture and help SCU create and maintain a healthy, inclusive environment for all. This survey will serve as a critical baseline and guide as we foster greater diversity and wider inclusion across SCU.
Continuing this important work will be critical for our next President.
Leadership and Governance
The University leadership is comprised of the Board of Trustees and the President’s Cabinet. The Cabinet advises the President on matters of strategic importance and on issues as requested by the President.
SCU is a collaborative environment, seeking and welcoming input from stakeholders across our University community. The University Coordinating Committee is SCU’s core committee that makes governance more efficient, effective, and responsive. Major University policy issues are routed through separate University Policy Committees with members appointed by the University Coordinating Committee. The University Policy Committees are the final collaborative bodies with the authority to formulate and recommend new University policy and major strategic changes, and to review significant changes in existing policy.

Opportunities and Challenges for the Next President
The 29th President of SCU will build on the strong foundation laid by President Michael E. Engh, S.J. and those before him, while continuing to transform the University for the future. To be successful, our next President will have some key attributes to address the following opportunities and challenges:
Santa Clara’s next President is responsible for the continued implementation of Santa Clara 2020, the University strategic plan. To do this, he advances and aligns people, programs, strategic initiatives, policies, organizational structure, resources, and marketing with the University’s distinctive vision, mission, and values, as well as its Ignatian charism. In addition, he will possess these important attributes:
- Be a strategic thinker with a clear long-term vision for the University. He must be willing to address the contemporary trends that are impacting the business model of higher education and manage the associated disruptive change.
- Continue to advance the academic quality and distinctiveness of the University in a way consistent with its mission and values as a Jesuit, Catholic institution of higher education. This task will be accomplished through his leadership, timely decision making, and effective communication, and by partnering with his Vice Presidents, board members, the campus community (students, faculty, and staff) and other important stakeholders, such as alumni, parents, and benefactors.
- Possess exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills, as well as a proven record of successful relationship, community, and team building.
- Be the primary external voice/spokesperson and relationship builder for the University to a variety of constituents. Serving as a CEO of a major educational institution in Silicon Valley, the President must be highly skilled in community relations and public relations, with an emphasis on the ability to reach out to and develop positive relationships with various stakeholders in industry and government
ADVANCING SCU’S JESUIT, CATHOLIC MISSION
An SCU education continues to be distinguished by its attention to the formation of the whole person and its focus on educating leaders of competence, conscience, and compassion. SCU’s next President will be integral in ensuring the University embodies its Jesuit, Catholic teachings –and that all of the University’s actions and choices are deeply rooted in these values. The President will embrace and advance SCU’s commitment to serve the community and create a more just, humane, and sustainable world.
CREATING A MORE DIVERSE AND INCLUSIVE CAMPUS CULTURE
Advancing a more inclusive community is a campus-wide goal reflected in SCU’s Jesuit values. Issues of race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation are important and urgent topics at SCU, as they are at universities and communities across the country. The next President must personally share SCU’s commitment to measurably improving diversity and inclusion, ensuring that all of our students, faculty, and staff work in an atmosphere of mutual respect that embraces and welcomes people of all backgrounds.
MAINTAINING THE UNIVERSITY’S FISCAL HEALTH, WHILE ADDRESSING RISING HIGHER-EDUCATION COSTS AND ENSURING STUDENT ACCESS
SCU, like many private universities today, is challenged with balancing the rising cost of education with the responsibility to ensure student access to a high-quality education. In collaboration with the Board of Trustees and the senior leadership team, the University’s next President will tackle this persistent challenge. Among the priorities will be to preserve and further improve SCU’s financial position, to continue to grow enrollment, and to ensure ongoing investment in our faculty and staff, as well as in our academic offerings, facilities, and technologies that benefit our students.
ADVANCING SCU’S ACADEMIC OFFERINGS
The next President will build on the quality and diversity of SCU’s faculty, staff, and students, while providing the resources and facilities necessary to support advanced teaching and scholarship. This will include building on existing programs while investing in other high-caliber academic programs across the University.
RECRUITING, RETAINING AND ENGAGING HIGH QUALITY FACULTY AND STAFF
SCU deeply values the many contributions of faculty and staff to the fabric of our University community, and we are committed to ensuring an environment where all faculty and staff are valued and respected. The next President will lead ongoing efforts to further engage faculty and staff; improve housing and compensation–especially for our lowest-paid faculty and staff; offer more job stability and certainty; provide clearer pathways for advancement; and increase share of voice for all who work in our campus community.
EXPANDING SCU’S RELATIONSHIPS IN LOCAL AND GLOBAL COMMUNITIES
It is central to SCU’s Jesuit, Catholic mission that the University help to create a more just and equitable community, not just in our local area (Silicon Valley & Bay Area), but in the world at large. Relationship- and bridge-building at the university, local, national, and global levels will be chief responsibilities of the new President. This work includes engaging with civic, business, and religious leaders in order to ensure SCU fulfills its responsibility to support the needs of our communities–and creates additional learning and enrichment opportunities for SCU students.
Roles and Qualifications of the President
The President is the chief executive officer of SCU and reports to the Board of Trustees. The President is an ex officio member, with full voting rights, of the Board of Trustees, the Executive Committee, and all the other Committees of the Board, except the Audit Committee. The President’s general duties are to supervise and control all of the business and affairs of the University.
In its next President, SCU seeks a Jesuit of deep personal faith who will uphold and foster SCU’s Jesuit heritage, mission, and identity. The successful candidate will be a collaborative, transparent, and hands-on leader, who is actively engaged in our University community. The ideal candidate will have a record of scholarship and transformative leadership; the ability to build and cultivate financial support for the University and its programs; and experience supporting a climate of academic achievement, mutual respect, and diversity and inclusion.
More specifically, SCU is seeking:
- A visionary leader with an Ignatian heart and mind, a strong faith in God, and a Jesuit commitment to justice and equality;
- An established intellectual with serious academic credibility;
- An accomplished and energetic leader with a bold vision for SCU’s future and someone who brings a sense of joy to the role;
- A decisive champion and advocate for innovation and teamwork across the entire University community;
- A dynamic personality who will engage directly and personally with faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, donors, and the community at-large; and
- An open- and fair-minded individual who respects, invites, and embraces differences, diversity, and inclusion.
The role of the President includes:
The President will exercise the vision, leadership, management skills, and commitment to engage all levels of faculty, staff, students, alumni, benefactors, friends, and board members in raising the quality and national reputation of the University.
The President will advance Jesuit education by providing the overall direction to the University for an integrated education across the College and schools; among academic departments and the Centers of Distinction; and among academic affairs, athletics, and student life. The President will encourage and support research, scholarship, and teaching that aim to improve the quality of Santa Clara University.
The President will serve as the University’s chief fundraiser and the face and voice of the University, not just in Silicon Valley, but across the nation and around the world. The President will serve as chief spokesperson and champion for the University brand, and will cultivate and foster meaningful relationships in an effort to expand a committed donor base that will further the University’s strategic priorities.
MANAGEMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY
The President will manage the University, working with a dedicated team of visionary executive leaders. This work includes ensuring effective leadership and management for all aspects of academic and student-life programs, athletics, enrollment management, facilities, resources, operations, organization, human resources, and university relations with its many constituencies.
The President will help generate and allocate resources according to priorities that best implement the Jesuit educational mission and advance the University’s Strategic Plan. This allocation will include exercising fiscal frugality in operating and capital budgets and ensuring spending only for that which advances quality.
