Faculty Awards

Rose Marie Beebe (modern languages) and Robert Senkewicz (history) have been named recipients of the 2014 Hubert Howe Bancroft Award, given annually by The Bancroft Library. The award is “for significant achievement in support of historical research and scholarship on California and the American West, in the preservation of primary and secondary source materials about the region, and in the interpretation and imaginative creation of its history.” Previous winners have included Isabel Allende, Joan Didion, and Kevin Starr.

Colleen Chien, law, was selected to serve in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) as senior advisor for intellectual property and innovation to Todd Park, the U.S. chief technology officer during the 2013–14 academic year. In her role, Chien advises Park on issues related to intellectual property and innovation, as well as privacy, open government, and civil liberties. She helps ensure that OSTP can fulfill its missions to coordinate science and technology policy across the executive branch and to provide advice to the president on science and technology policy matters.

Robert Eberhart, management, received a service award from the U.S. Department of State and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry for his two-year leadership of the U.S.–Japan Innovation and Entrepreneurship Council. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy presented the award.

Alexander Field, economics, served as a Phi Beta Kappa visiting scholar. Each year the society selects top scholars in the liberal arts and sciences to travel to universities and colleges where Phi Beta Kappa chapters are located. Visiting scholars spend two days on each campus meeting informally with undergraduates, participating in classroom lectures and seminars, and giving one major lecture that is open to the academic community and the general public. Also this year, Field was elected a fellow of the Cliometric Society.

Silvia Figueira, computer engineering, received the Undergraduate Research Mentoring Award from the National Center for Women & Information Technology and AT&T.

SCU Board of Trustees Chair and Business Professor Robert Finocchio was named one of eight “Outstanding Directors” by the San Francisco Business Times and the Silicon Valley Business Journal.

Lucia Gilbert, psychology and counseling psychology, received the 2013 Leona Tyler Award, which is the highest award given by the Society of Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association in recognition of an outstanding career of teaching, scholarship, and leadership.
 
John Hawley, English, has been awarded a Fulbright Award for the 2015 spring semester. He will be at the Humboldt University of Berlin, the city’s first university, in the Department of English and American Studies offering a course on the literature of immigration and doing a comparative study of the diasporic experience in ethnic literatures.

Francisco Jiménez ’66, modern languages and literatures, received honors for his participation in a Community Read Program in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The communitywide read program promotes literacy, and his book, Cajas de Carton (The Circuit), was selected for this year’s program.
 
Shoba Krishnan, electrical engineering, was chosen by Assembly member Bob Wieckowski as Woman of the Year for the 25th Assembly District for her dedication to students both inside and outside the classroom as well as her work on community projects and STEM.

Dan Lewis, computer engineering, received the Quality Educator Award from the International Society for Quality Electronic Design.

Nam Ling, computer engineering, was named “Outstanding Overseas Scholar” by Shanghai University of Electric Power.

Tonya Nilsson, civil engineering, was named a Campus Star by the American Society for Engineering Education. This honor recognizes faculty members who serve as role models to their peers with respect to innovative research and/or educational activities.
 

William O’Neill, S.J., Jesuit School of Theology, received the 2014 Sarlo Excellence in Teaching Award, which honors outstanding professors at colleges and universities in Northern California.
 

Hisham Said, civil engineering, received an Early Career Award from ELECTRI International.
 

Women of Influence: Six SCU faculty were honored as Women of Influence 2014 in the Silicon Valley Business Journal’s annual list of women who have made a significant mark in their fields, including:
