The 2020 Honoree is Dr. Gina Hens-Piazza, Joseph S. Alemany Professor of Biblical Studies Nomination
In her nearly three decades of service at the Jesuit School of Theology, Dr. Hens-Piazza has formed generations of students, lay and clergy alike, to be scholars, ministers and compassionate, faith-filled people through the study of Scripture. Dr. Hens-Piazza is widely recognized as a foremost Catholic authority in Hebrew Bible Studies in the United States and around the world. In addition to her own writing, she serves two editorial boards and every other year, she leads a group of 12 students to Jerusalem for the course Children of Sarah, Mary and Hagar to study the life situations of Christian, Muslim and Jewish women in their communities as they struggle for peace. Dr. Hens-Piazza serves every year on major committees for the Jesuit School of Theology, and preaches regularly at JST liturgies as well as in churches around the area, where she teaches others how to preach, particularly about violence in scriptural texts. At JST in 2019, she co-led an important workshop, Preaching in the Context of Sexual Abuse. For 2017-2019, she served first as the Vice President of the Catholic Biblical Association of America and is currently serving the second of two years as its President. It is impossible to overstate Dr. Hens-Piazza's contributions to the academic and community life of JST, SCU, and Catholic institutions around the globe.
