The LEAD Scholars program has received a grant of 1.5 million dollars from the Koret Foundation to support expansion and enhancement of the program for first generation students. Launched more than 15 years ago, the LEAD Scholars program focuses on academic success, community engagement, and service, for students whose parents did not attend college. The program currently serves approximately 45% of Santa Clara's first generation students. It yields outstanding second-year retention rates (97%) and four-year graduation rates of 87.5%, exceeding the rates for SCU students in general. With Koret Foundation support Santa Clara will increase the capacity of the LEAD Scholars program to serve approximately 75% of incoming first generation students. In addition, the Koret Foundation support will provide funding for the expansion of opportunities for students to undertake internships, participate in undergraduate research, study abroad, and engage in other transformative learning experiences.
