SCU to Welcome 378 New International Students from 50 Countries

This fall, Santa Clara is projected to welcome 378 new international students from 50 countries to campus who will join the approximately 1,300 international students already at our university. Please join me in welcoming these newest members of our community as you encounter them on campus to help them feel more at home. I also encourage faculty members to take time to share information that may be unfamiliar to international students--and is worth reviewing with all incoming students--about expectations for academic integrity, classroom engagement and participation, and collaborative learning.

Please be aware that many of our students have been educated in academic cultures that have norms and expectations that are different from our own. All first-year undergraduate students will have participated in discussions of common readings about academic integrity, and will sign pledge books in their residential learning communities. Please reiterate, to both domestic and international students, the University’s commitment to academic integrity by reviewing norms for citation, collaboration on homework or other assignments, and other expectations that may be unique to your courses or academic fields.

I hope you will also encourage students to make use of student services and resources that are of great benefit to international students as they adjust to the academic culture of the United States and Santa Clara. These include the HUB Writing Center, the University Library, the Career Center, and the Cowell Health Center. Students might also be interested in programming provided by Campus Ministry, which hosts interfaith dialogues throughout the academic year.
