Faculty Leave

Mid-Probationary Review and Junior Faculty Development Leave supports the professional development of tenure-track faculty in their pre-tenure period. After a positive mid-probationary review, assistant professors are eligible for one quarter of paid leave to advance their scholarship and teaching. Faculty receive full salary during the year the Junior Faculty Development Leave is taken.

Junior Faculty Development Leave (JFDL): Application Guidelines

The Faculty Handbook states, “A sabbatical leave is awarded for the intellectual and academic enrichment of the faculty member and for the benefit of the University through improved teaching and scholarship.” The University’s sabbatical policy provides tenured faculty and senior lecturers with one academic quarter of leave with full pay for every nine quarters of service, subject to approval of the sabbatical proposal. Faculty can accumulate up to 27 quarters of credit toward sabbatical, enabling one full year of paid leave. Faculty may carry over unused accrued time from one sabbatical to the next. Sabbatical leaves are generally to be taken within a single academic year.

Please read the Application Guidelines carefully for details on eligibility and projects appropriate for sabbatical leave. The Sabbatical Leave Options spells out options for leaves at full and reduced pay, depending on accrued quarters of full-time service.

 

Pregnancy Disability Leave

The University offers paid pregnancy disability leave to all faculty members. Faculty members who are planning to take a pregnancy disability leave should review Section 4 of the ; contact Human Resources at 408-554-4392 to ask for a copy of the Faculty Leave of Absence Guide; discuss the leave with Human Resources; and inform their department chair of the pending leave.

Family or Medical Leave

The University offers paid family or medical leave to eligible faculty. Faculty who are planning to take such a leave should review Section 4 of the ; contact Human Resources at 408-554-4392 to ask for a copy of the Faculty Leave of Absence Guide; discuss the leave with Human Resources; and inform their department chair of the pending leave. All requests for family or medical leave must be made in writing to the Human Resources Department at least 30 days prior to the start of the leave or at the earliest reasonable time.

Unpaid Leave of Absence

At the discretion of the Provost, any member of the faculty may be granted a leave of absence of up to one year's duration for bona fide emergency or for other personal reasons, such as to engage in public service, in formal study, in research, or in teaching at another institution. Faculty requesting leaves are advised to consult with the chair and dean.
